Great vision but inadequate execution and poor talent retention.
Pros
-Malaysia's No. 1 company: The big brand, priority workplace in everyone's dream. -Opportunity to work along with privileged top tier individuals in Malaysia. -Relaxing, exclusive and conducive government working style with handsome pay. -There are many subsidiaries/branches of Petronas and if you're qualified, you can be transferred according to your internal application. -Probably the only main reason why most people stay. Even if working in sub-entity company with not much contribution/profit, only permanent staff will get handsome bonus (5-6 figure) annually distributed by mother's company. -A lot of cool company merchandise and shops in KLCC Twin Tower with employee discount. -Easy public transportation access if working in KLCC Twin Tower. -The pride and joy to be able to flexing company's logo everywhere.
Cons
-Underdeveloped talent with slow stagnant career growth: Inadequate training and lack of skills development program. Maybe good for fresh grad to start a career but there is still traditional career progression / promotion like government style. -Not a good choice for experienced professionals. If your background from established companies, do expect some disappointments/downgrading. there will be challenging for you to apply skills as technology here is pretty left-behind. -Nepotism, cronyism, and pretty-privileged are applicable. -Lack of expertise to lead transformation initiatives, especially in digitization. -Company/management/leadership not ready to adopt advanced technology at scale. -Compartmentalized decision-making, never ending saga: Often during decision making, people manager will say, "I cannot make the decision", "it's not up to me to approve" as organizational structure gets in the way. Imagine how unchallenge the operations are. So, say no to improvisation and modern civilization. -Fear of becoming irrelevant and pushback: Not only with lack of career development, the existing employees especially senior employees are resistance to adapt and keep up with digital culture and reluctant to adopt new skills, which hinders company’s growth. -Non systematic business operations. -Poor data management. Big mess. -Biased 360° internal review. Company with majority of contract staffs does not collect opinion and reviews from contract staffs. Imagine working everyday and contributes to business operation and performing better than permanent employees but your voices are not being heard? -'Speak Up' channel is a scam. Lots of employees reluctant to use the channel as they know there will be consequences towards them. So, they shut up, pretending like the problems are none of their business and jump to a better company. -Lack of recognization and rewards. Mental and emotional abuse: -Favoritism and cronyism are cancers and still spreading. -Lots people with lack quality and skills of managing people appointed as people managers and thus, they become red flag micromanagers. -Verbal Harassment towards staffs: openly shouting, scolding staffs in the public with intention to humiliate, downgrade and demotivate staff morale. -Managers as bullies: Invite other team members in the attempts to gang-up against least favorite staff. -"No blaming culture" is a joke: They are campaigning "no one to be blamed" everyday while blaming staffs for any failure deliveries. The positions that likely targeted to be blamed the most are Project Managers, Admins , Assistant(s), contract workers.
