The opposite of transparent

Pros

I struggle to find any pro’s that don’t start with “Certn used to be…” When I was hired the benefits were great and even then they slowly took those away without recognition that we chose Certn because of these benefits and they were written into our contracts.

Cons

I share this as a warning. Any of the recent “positive” reviews you see are likely from an attempt by leadership to drown out the flood of negative reviews they deservedly earned after the impressive mismanagement and countless reorganizations over the past year. Don’t trust these. Leadership often would reach out to individuals and ask for public support on slack messages, LinkedIn posts, and glass door, abusing their power as they know a personal request to a subordinate is unlikely to go unanswered. There is a reason most of these reviews pointedly call out toxic leadership and their misalignment. Their attempts at “transparency” are hollow and disingenuous and often in company wide meetings employees are berated and blamed for missing targets in a misguided belief that this is showing “radical candor”.

Pros

- Good compensation - Great perks (fitness, green transportation, personal development, etc.) - Great hardware - They give stock options

Cons

Sad things about stereotypes is, that sometimes they are true. It is said, East Coast people are kind but not nice and West Coast people are nice but not kind. Certn is the typical west coast company -> Nice, but not kind. If there is a definition and example of toxic positivity, it is Certn. All that positivity that this company exonerates is to hide to true, pretending to be kind nature. The management will lie to you to of things not hitting south and that everything will be okay, while it is not. The company beams all positivity but will fire you as soon as they do not need you anymore, then they will just hire someone else (and then fire them). Most engineering managers at Certn are inexperienced micromanagers who want to control their engineer's. The company promotes "owner's schedule" as they are remote first, however, in reality they expect you to be their slaves and work from 8AM to 6PM. They give stock options, thought it's a Pro, but the reason they give you those stock options is, so, you stay with them despite the micro management, expectation of longer working hours and toxic positivity. Career growth opportunities are not that great, as they tend to hire people from outside for senior positions, instead of promoting within.

'living the nightmare' at Certn

Pros

The majority of employee benefits that have since been taken away in the past year. The vacation and wellness days are still generous, but not even close to being worth the grind and overhead you have to endure day to day.

Cons

The loss of all nearly everything that made Certn special and the workplace it used to be needs to be documented and shared into a blog one day or something. In one calendar year, we saw the erosion of company values, the talent that aligned with those values, and a culture that's now been reduced to "do anything to step over their fellow "Certonian" to retain your value in the company before the next wave of layoffs". This is the kind of toxic work environment where everything from the management, the product and the industry they're in is near disrepair. Certn wanting to pride itself as a forward thinking company is frankly a laughable sentiment and must be performative at this point. There is nothing forward thinking about what they're trying to bring to the market and Certn-ly NOT in the way they treat their employees. Applier beware - and be prepared to come into half baked processes, for half baked baked products lead by half baked senior leadership.
