Pros

-You get to work with a lovely team of moderators and supervisors - You make meaningful friendships. -Sometimes you truly feel like you’re making a difference. - The community of young people is truly inspiring

Cons

I’ve had the privilege of volunteering for this charity, and I truly believe in its mission. The cause is brilliant, and the community is full of incredible, strong young people who bravely open up and share their struggles. It was an absolute honour to get to know them and support them through their journeys. Before the merger with MHI, my experience as a volunteer was amazing. I felt appreciated and well-informed about my role and responsibilities. The support for volunteers was excellent, with regular check ins, especially after particularly challenging shifts. However, during and after the merger, things changed significantly. I often felt unappreciated and almost forgotten in my role, which is difficult when you’re volunteering after a long day at work or university or picking up an extra shift last minute to help out. I want to emphasize that none of this is the fault of the community team. It’s clear that since the merger, the original staff team left, and a new community team had to be pulled together from different departments. They are working incredibly hard to settle into their roles, and I sincerely hope the leadership is providing them with the support and recognition they deserve. Thank you, community team, for your efforts - I only hope the community itself isn’t feeling the strain of these changes. That said, it's still early days and i'd like to try and remain hopeful for improvements. - Volunteers frequently cancel shifts last minute, leading to support room closures and putting extra pressure on those who do show up. -Volunteer appreciation and support has significantly declined since the merger. -Uncertainty and lack of clear communication post-merger. This has been amplified with the ridiculous decision of closing down the WhatsApp groups - our ONLY way to communicate as a team. -The online volunteer portal is outdated and difficult to use. -Since the merger, it’s been harder to get in touch with the team email responses take FARR too long -Since the merger it’s more difficult to get in touch with safe guarding teams. On Fridays when you’re running chat threads alone this can be quite worrying. With the closing of the WhatsApp groups this makes situations worse. You will supporting young people alone, with no way to communicate to the team. If you are supporting a YP in crisis - well, good luck to you with your minimal training and 0 support. Unless you’re able to multi task by repeatedly calling safe guarding until they answer, whilst talking to 10+ yp at once. -Volunteers who have given their time for YEARS are suddenly being dropped due to their location. Don’t think that you mean anything to this charity, you will simply be replaced. -Build relationships with fellow volunteers? Oh, absolutely not. WhatsApp groups (including social channel) have been closed and we have been heavily discouraged from creating new group chats. This has left many volunteers feeling disconnected and while I understand the GDPR concerns, abruptly removing these spaces without offering alternatives has impacted team morale and the friendships we’ve built. -Staff, volunteer, community members are all dropping out post merger. I’d like to think this is alarm bells for upper management.

Pros

This experience helped me get a better paid job with competent management

Cons

- I worked with the most unprofessional senior staff member I've ever encountered while at The Mix. I appreciate that high level jobs can bring out the worst in people, but I never expected to meet someone working at a charity (and in such a senior position) who would deliberately create such a hostile working environment. She was rude, patronising, petty, vindictive, played favourites with the staff members, and did not change her behaviour at all until she had been reported to HR. She is clearly skilled at acting like a reasonable person with other authority figures, but will try to intimidate those who challenge her. Her behaviour was always manipulative and passive-aggressive, and it seemed to be an open secret in the office that she was a bully. On more than one occasion, private conversations I'd had with her were recounted to me, word for word, by other colleagues. The situation reminded me of being at an all-girls secondary school where the girls with low self-esteem had to make themselves feel better by trying to make other people miserable too. I am not the only one who felt baffled by her professional conduct; I know of at least four other talented, committed colleagues whose decisions to leave The Mix were heavily influenced by an unwillingness to continue working alongside her. -Working on the helpline was a stressful and isolating experience, made worse by the antisocial hours and abject lack of support. The company pays lots of lip service to being a pleasant environment, with plenty of pointless meetings about issues that likely have no relevance to your own work, but your concerns will be ignored if you work on the helpline. Originally we had individual clinical supervision, and a (monthly) private opportunity to discuss the workload and how we were coping, which was gradually reduced and then changed to group meetings, making it impossible or at the very least uncomfortable to talk about personal worries or distressing calls. -In addition to the false statement on the job posting about us having bank holidays off work, the listing stated that there were opportunities for remote working. I was with The Mix for a year and they made no attempt to set up remote working until a global pandemic forced them to. Considering that we were constantly beset with tech issues in the office (which we'd had no training on how to resolve), this made no sense whatsoever. Since we began working from home, and using our own, working computers, the helpline began to function better than ever before.

The Mix Response

We are sorry to hear that your experience of working at The Mix has not been positive. The Mix takes the wellbeing of its staff seriously and in particular over the last 6 months we have been working hard with the staff team to look at three areas; pay, operations and staff support. A comprehensive salary review was completed at the beginning of the year and pay was amended for a number of staff. Operational systems were introduced to allow for all staff to be involved in how the charity is run; we are in the process of setting up an additional staff forum, independent from SMT. The complaints and grievances procedures have been reviewed (along with all our policies, they are reviewed bi-annually) to ensure that all staff feel confident and able to express concerns early so we can act on them. All staff are continuing to be supported to develop a progression plan that works for them and the organisation. Supervision for all support staff has been reviewed to ensure that all staff are well supported. We have already launched at EAP helpline. We have developed a Working at Home policy to adapt to the pandemic and regularly consult with staff to manage remotely and our move back to an office. We have begun initiatives to ensure those working on shifts can contribute to all aspects of The Mix e.g. moving all staff meetings and enabling all the staff to attend annual planning days. The Mix holds anonymous staff surveys and we have increased the frequency of these to monitor how things are improving. We will continue to listen to our staff and make necessary changes make improvements where required.
