Pros

There were a handful of colleagues that were decent human beings.

Cons

They do not care about their employees at all, you are blatantly treated as though you are replaceable. Not to mention that if you do leave, they will replace you with someone who they will without a doubt try to pay even less than the meager salary they paid you. Bringing me to my next point that this company grossly underpays any employee that is not a part of upper management or C - level. The management is so financially selfish that they would rather lose a current or potential employee than pay them a fair salary. Meanwhile upper management, who is doing half the amount of work, is making a ridiculous amount. You don't get personal time off or sick time if you are an hourly employee, which shouldn't even be legal. I would add in that the environment is toxic and depressing, but what can you expect when employees are subject to the above. Don't work here. Don't buy what they tell you in an interview, because from experience, it's not true.

Pros

Smithers has potential, yet has a lot of work to do to become a premier, modern day employer. In all fairness to the organization, there were some positive experiences during my time, but unfortunately these positive experiences do not prevail against the negative experiences as outlined below. On a positive note, Smithers is a truly entrepreneurial organization and encourages employees to speak up and make recommendations to improve the business. I watched hard working employees receive, or be put on a path for a promotion.

Cons

For those reading reviews, it’s important to note that Smithers has multiple businesses, and many of the low star reviews are a reflection of one particular department which has constant turnover. The department I worked under was nothing short of a toxic work environment for multiple reasons. I observed multiple employees suffer from emotional abuse at the workplace as they experienced unwelcome conduct based off of personal challenges outside of their control. The daily work environment included mobbing, gossiping and bullying causing great conflict. There was offensive behavior, inappropriate conduct and conversations mostly sexual at nature. There is a great lack of privacy in the office - employees sit in small cubicles with 2 foot high walls above their desks. You can hear everyone’s phone calls, conversations and comments. I observed countless offensive jokes, public name calling, acts of intimidation, blatant lies, ridicule, public mockery, insults and put-downs from staff to staff. The company did not take the aggressors actions seriously albeit multiple complaints from many different staff members in this department. If you were an aggressor but were good at your job, these horrendous behaviors were excused. Multiple employees suffered from anxiety and depression related mental health issues due to the toxic work environment. I watched so many employees quit - sometimes on the spot - due to the unbearable daily abuse and venomous environment. And yes, all of this was reported to HR time and time again, for years. But was it documented? Verdict’s out. Smithers Group is not a progressive employer whatsoever and is run like a good ole boys club. Be prepared to work a strict 8am - 5pm schedule with no flexibility. There is no working from home permitted. If you travel for work for the week and arrive home late Sunday, expect to be in the office on Monday morning.

Pros

I am was very happy here and even developed good skills. I like the employee family atmosphere they give, outings for employees are nice seeing as that is something that corporate America just doesn't do these days. Michael the owner seems to really care. High rating for work balance because they do make effort to have employee events.

Cons

We have constant turn over in our office due to high-level management they brought in from overseas and another employee who belittles/is rude to everyone in the department. It's an uncomfortable place to work when the people who mistreated me are praised. The way we don't have a lot of vacation time/hourly pay is also an issue for me. THe "company" - the owner - acts like he really cares and wants a good work environment - but the way the management conducts and treats people does not match at all. I'm hoping to use my experience to get into a company that isn't so much politics and people mistreating employees. Not trying to complain but what has happened over the past few weeks in the office is just getting worse to this point.

Thank you for taking the time to share some feedback with us. We do work hard at all levels of the organization to provide a culture for our employees where they can feel valued and thrive in our organization. This includes the social events I am glad you have enjoyed but also our commitment to helping all employees understand and deliver against our standards of professional conduct. We would never want any employee to feel ‘belittled or mistreated’ and I’m sorry you feel that way. I’d welcome the opportunity to discuss this in more detail with you to understand the issue please contact me directly at kellis@smithers.com I appreciate your ideas and suggestions on a survey and we will look into this. Staff feedback is critical to our continuous improvement and our recent change to our sick time policy is an example of how it can help both the business and the team. Thanks again for taking the time to share your input and sorry your experience with us is not what we would like.
