Thank you very much for taking the time to share with us your positive experiences of working at the NSPCC. It’s really good to hear that our mix of policies and provisions relating to work life balance, wellness and personal development are making a positive difference to our people. And while only one motivator for our people, pay is important and as you will know, we have our stated pay promise, which we honour each year and which will see us being more competitive in relation to comparable charities.

Pros

The mission to support children and young people is, of course, fundamentally important and inspires immense dedication from staff and volunteers. You meet some incredible individuals who are caring and empathic.

Cons

Recent strategic changes initiated by senior management have created a very challenging environment. There is a new, intense focus on quantity over quality, which puts practitioners and volunteers under immense pressure and risks diluting professional standards. This has had a significant impact on employee wellbeing, with many colleagues struggling with stress and poor mental health due to a lack of essential support like clinical supervision and a poor employee assistance programme - in addition, shift patterns and difficult annual leave processes impact this further. Feedback from experienced staff often feels dismissed if it doesn't align with senior management's narrative. These service changes have unfortunately led to a high turnover of staff and volunteers, and limited responsibility for any service issues from decision-makers. Many dedicated, long-term colleagues are now seeking new jobs at a rapid rate, while new practitioners are being onboarded very quickly leaving them feeling unconfident and unskilled.

Thank you for taking the time to share your reflections. We all want Childline to be a place where people feel valued, supported, and able to do their best for children and young people. While our extensive and established internal quality assurance and independent inspections don’t reflect a decline in quality or support for new and existing staff, I recognise the importance of listening to team experiences. If you have specific examples you'd be willing to share, I’d welcome a conversation with you or please feel free to email these to Shaun Friel (Childline Director) at sfriel@nspcc.org.uk.

Pros

Support - The whole Helpline are supportive towards each other, no matter what the job role. Opportunity - The Helpline provides opportunity to develop your career, regardless of where you are within your career. This can be within the job role or to progress. Hard work is recognised and valued. Team Spirit - Working as a team is encouraged and positive relationships are formed throughout the helpline, across the three bases. The opportunity to make a difference - A varied job, with no two days the same. The ability to help and support many children and families. Fast paced environment - The volume of the work ensures a need to be able to thrive in a busy environment. This ensures that days go quickly, but work stays at work. Generous annual leave, salary and your lunch hour, is YOUR lunch hour! Supportive management- The senior management team are supportive, approachable and willing to listen and learn.

Cons

Shift work/ one in three weekends(for full time staff) - Not everybody’s cup of tea. Lack of flexibility for hours worked -Mainly 35 hour or 17 and a half hour shift patterns. Lack of autonomy in the working day- Due to the nature of the work, a level of organisation and structure is required, which is unavoidable in impacting on autonomy.

Pros

Rewarding job, supporting children and young people.

Cons

There is a management structure in place which doesn't seem to make decisions in the best interests of staff. Pay is decent but it's a charity so not the best paid for the work/responsibility

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your experiences. It is great to read that, despite the concerns you raise about management, you found the role rewarding and that you were able to support children and young people. This is the reason we are all here and it therefore saddened me to read that from your perspective the management structure in your area didn’t demonstrate doing this. I encourage you to please get hold of me directly for a confidential conversation if you would like to share more with me. Thank you, Brett Terry

Thank you for your feedback. It’s great to hear that you have a wonderful team around you and that you feel valued and listened to. And most importantly that you feel you’re making a positive difference to the lives of children and young people – that is absolutely what we’re all about. Your feedback about having clearer career pathways is really important and something that we’ll pick up with the team to make sure that everyone is having regular development conversations about supporting you to achieve your aspirations and progressing in your career. Thank you.

Pros

Everyone is very kind and clearly in the job because they are passionate about helping children and young people Generally well organised Opportunities for CPD

Cons

Sometimes screening of volunteer email responses by supervisors is insufficient and questionable advice is given to the service user. Some supervisors are more proactive than others.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and for your time with us. I am delighted that you valued the opportunities for professional development, as this is important to us. I agree that the service has at its core kind and committed professionals who are dedicated to helping children and young people. We have a robust quality assurance process to ensure the consistency of our service. I would welcome a follow-up conversation if you have suggestions on how we can build upon this, as we are always keen to learn from the experiences of those who work with or have worked with us. With thanks and best wishes. Shaun Friel (Childline Director) shaun.friel@nspcc.org.uk

Very Poor Management

Pros

- It is a privilege to work with lovely colleagues who work hard, really care about children and strive everyday to make a positive difference. - The origins of the organisation and purported cause are very worthy. - Some children and families do benefit from the work.

Cons

- Toxic work environment: routine bullying from management, lack of commitment to EDI in senior leadership. - Bias in recruitment: people are often employed because they are a friend of the hiring manager. - HR are unable to help or advise on most issues. - Policies, EDI, trauma-informed initiatives are ignored by senior leaders. - Restructures/redundancies/change management are very poorly managed.

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences of working at the NSPCC. While it is deeply troubling to read your overall negative experience, it is crucial that we do. We aspire to create the conditions where all our people, volunteers and employees, feel valued for the unique individual they are and for the part they play. And it is clear from the experiences you describe that this is not the case for you. We really hope you feel able and willing to speak to Brett Terry, our People Director, about your experiences. That way, you can play a part in affecting positive changes at the organisation.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of working with the NSPCC. It is good to hear that you were part of a team who reflected the commitment we all have to helping and supporting vulnerable children and their families. We understand the importance of training to ensure our staff are fully equipped to deliver high quality services and to also have opportunities to develop new skills. Following the amalgamation of our Children’s Services and National Services Directorates into one Services Directorate, we took the opportunity to review our mandatory training and other development opportunities including safeguarding training, core training and skills training and offer a range of courses, alongside our programme to develop, support and assess newly qualified social workers. We recognise it is not only what we do to prevent child abuse and neglect that is important but how we do this and we strive to maintain a working environment where everyone feels valued and supported to play their part. I am therefore concerned to read your comment regarding the culture you experienced which is not reflective of our values and behaviours. Bullying in any form will not be tolerated and I would encourage you to contact me so we can discuss and understand more about your concerns. Karen Squillino, Local Services Director

Cronyism & Bias

Recommend
CEO approval
Business outlook

Pros

- Supporting and safeguarding children and young people is extremely rewarding - many passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers

Cons

- management do not adhere to the organisational values - cronyism is now apparent with staff being promoted on the basis of their relationships with managers and treated more favourably than other staff - it's about whether your face fits or not rather than ability
