US Business is at a Crossroads

Pros

At the end of 2018, Lavazza acquired Mars Drinks in West Chester, PA - a company that I joined in 2017. I joined for the exceptional values-driven and egalitarian culture. The Lavazza Group adopted our Associate model, and even rolled out new Lavazza Values which were very much in line with the legacy values from Mars. The Lavazza family rolled out a New Humanity campaign, and everything was looking up… until mid-2020.

Cons

After COVID hit, the NY office management took over the entire US market including the West Chester operations, with a re-structuring announced at the end of October. Our new president and my new direct manager both came from a consulting background, where I imagine they were quite successful. Intelligent individuals. However, they do not appear to espouse the Lavazza values that we were so hopeful about. They lead through intimidation and dictation, with an insecure hold on power and control. They do not outwardly appear to have the experience or desire to lead by hiring managers that they can trust to improve the business, and leveraging values to motivate them towards continuous improvement.

Pros

- great benefits - beautiful office, unlimited coffee & tea, cafeteria food is amazing - cool product - work/life balance (to some extent). "summer fridays", get off at 2P. - has potential to be a great place to work, if new leadership in place

Cons

This is a burn and churn culture. About a third of people quit each year. And this is partly why: - Leadership is weak and hides in ivory tower. No clear direction on who is responsible for most things, just unorganized. Can result in chaos and everyone just blaming each other when things don't work out. Top leaders perceived as untrustworthy and withholding information. - There is little to no diversity at the top, almost entirely white males, mostly from Italy. Yet the factory is almost all people of color. - Connection with HQ in Italy needs a lot of improvement. There is very little central support, but on the flip side, a lot of red tape. - Culture rift is tangible between legacy Mars (West Chester office) and legacy Lavazza (NY office). Us vs. them mentality, makes collaboration between departments that much more difficult.

Great brand, terrible senior leadership

Pros

Great brand to work for and has high potential. 1/2 the office is young and vibrant intelligent people.

Cons

Narrow-minded internally focused leadership. Senior leadership has no strategy besides acquiring other companies and not trying to grow the current business. CEO Riboni is a micro-manager and has a poor attitude not to mention is sometimes just downright nasty in person and via his scathing emails.
