Pros

Located next door to a Sephora.

Cons

1) Signed a contract guaranteeing hourly pay and a biweekly check. Managers were 6 weeks late paying me, then abruptly dropped me to “focus on other projects.” After waiting another 2 weeks so they had time for my check to clear the bank, a manager called and attempted to negotiate my pay. He suggested billing me for fewer hours than I had worked, which would have saved them, a “successful” real estate firm, a few hundred dollars. Didn’t work because of something called the Department of Labor. 2) Interns are either severely underpaid or completely unpaid. FYI, both unpaid internships and internships with stipends need to meet certain criteria. Otherwise, it’s illegal not to pay minimum wage. For example, you have to actually provide training instead of making your graphic design interns deliver packages. 3) Shady business practices. Check reviews for JWC Real Estate Group, the CEO’s other firm. Says it all about how Kech Development is run. 4) No company culture. The nicest people there were interns but they left very quickly, either of their own accord or because 3 months had passed and it was time for managers to bring in a new batch of unsuspecting college students for free labor. Full timers don’t bother saying hi or even get to know your name probably because they know you’ll be gone in a month. 5) Horribly managed. Knew one intern that waited 2 hours on his first day to be given a computer. A week later he still didn’t have a set schedule. They often don’t give interns or employees contracts, probably so you don’t have proof of an agreement if things go sour. Rude manager yells at workers. 6) Below market value wages. It’s hard to tell if they’ve fallen on hard times or just don’t like to pay anyone but themselves. 7) Job listings are straight up lies. Mine said you’ll get to work on a strong team-based environment with other developers; you actually work as the sole developer in the most antisocial office in NYC.

Pros

Extremely fast-paced work environment. Challenging yet rewarding. On-boarding process is extremely thorough although everyone is expected to learn quickly. Capacity & capability will be tested immediately as everyone is expected to wear multiple hats. Work never gets mundane as the nature of the work is constantly changing, really gets your feet wet right away and exposes you to all the different moving pieces to make the operation work. Realistic opportunities to join as a fulltime upon completion of internship/graduation. CEO is incredible smart.

Cons

Smaller office environment might not be suitable for some. Interns are expected to learn and piece things together quickly. Need to have good phone skills, lots of calls. Long hours Steep learning curve No benefits
