Pros

It is a job. You will have something to put on your resume in the future. If you are blessed to be in a good department they will give a nice bonus at the end of each year.

Cons

Boys club completely run by office politics. If you are not buddy buddy with management they will either boot you out or keep you low on the totem pole. It is very easy to work yourself out of a job. Multiple times I have been informed in my department to slow down and take more breaks as it makes others look bad. Unpaid overtime. You are expected to work long days and weekends without any extra pay. This is normally fine but they abuse it. At the end of the month you will notice that pay vs time worked usually equals bellow minimum wage. Lies and cover ups. If a manager makes a mistake or someone they deem of value screws up. Expect the blame to be shifted. No direction on work. You are expected to come in knowing everything and figure stuff out on your own. I had to lean on my co workers for weeks just to get used to the software and figure out how to resolve things before I could ever hope to help others. I.T.... All of the good IT members of this company either left or were fired. We used to have computers made for us in the matter of a day or 2. Now it is months. Months for them to put windows on a computer..... Half the time IT do not even talk to you. They just close your ticket and expect you to know what is going on. There also is no backup server. For YEARS I have put in requests to have files restored.. For years I have been told no.. We have a backup server but it doesnt work? Has it ever worked? What is going on in the Ottawa office. It doesnt even have an IT member anymore. Half the IT do not even have schooling or education in the field. It blows my mind.

Overworked and Under paid

Pros

Trying to come up with some pros, the company I work for was acquired by Harris years ago. Good vacation time accrued, but is countered by the overtime expectation, below industry pay increases.

Cons

P.C.'s you get for work are slow with not enough hard drive and take months to get, VP of my division doesn't even know what our software does. Salary increases are incredibly low, the bonus they give year fluctuates in amount and neither the raises and bonus covers the amount of overtime you are expected to work. You only get a good performance review if you have worked a lot of unpaid overtime. When staff leaves they do not fill position, leaving others to do more work without compensation. Many, many people at or above management level compared to actual workers. No work/Life balance, they expect you to be available 24\7 and don't compensate you for it. They want you to do their work outside of business hours. People will back stab you to advance themselves. They think salaried employee means that you should work 24\7. No training, you are expected to just figure things out. I can't tell you how many times I've made plans for after work only to have to change my plans last minute because of some kind of emergency. I've had to stop making plans and commitments. Even getting to their out of town Holiday Party and back requires you to put in major overtime hours and cost you money out of your own pocket. But they consider that a "Perk".
