Academia culture can be toxic

Sometimes doing research is and exhausting

Not enough pay for most jobs, sometimes last for only one semester

If you're working as CS or something different than the actual department, you most likely won't be working with fellow people in your major

No cons. Great opportunity for student.

Honestly, not many cons I can think of. The department honestly tries to increase grad student salary annually (and was successful in it every year I've been in the program so far), but with the current budget cuts, they can not offer it this year. Hopefully, this trend will be restored once the scientific funding situation improves.

Advancement opportunities for internal candidates.

The student fee is much higher than other schools
