Pros

Great location, some nice people. Work live balance is good.

Cons

New CEO coming in will not change things, expect another load of changes, literally everyone is looking for a new job. Parent company made redundancies a couple of months ago and have more or less said that have set time to turn things around. CTO is part time (joke for a tech company). There is a London, Dundee divide and the architect is a joke, he has no real experience and just reads a lot and because the CTO listens to him the tech team end up implementing what he wants. Good place to learn new language, but not very many jobs in the market for elixir developers! I am using my time to learn and look for a job.

I'm disappointed to hear your feedback but really appreciate you being candid and taking the time to share your thoughts. Technology is at the core of our business and our Tech/Product leadership will continue to reflect that, including at the Executive team level. I agree with you that there are setbacks, unexpected and expected, in any tech stack migration. Moving from a large monolith to a micro service architecture is challenging. As is learning new languages like Elixir, React and NodeJS. But at Findmypast, new skills and improvement are part of the culture we’re building. Growing developers skill sets is important to us so I’m glad you had the opportunity to learn the functional paradigm while here. I invite you to come and talk to me, anytime. Ben Hudson

Not worth the heartbreak

Pros

Some of the smartest, loveliest and most dedicated people I have ever worked with. It's a trap though, they'll make you stay longer than you should for your own sanity and career.

Cons

Too many quarterly objectives and the shortest attention span you've ever seen in a business. Priorities change all the time and everything needs to be done NOW even though we don't have nearly enough people to achieve even half of what's planned. Split personality across the business. Engineering is run in a flat structure and follows a lot of modern startup principles while other departments still assign excessive importance to managers. The teams are tiny and somehow there are layers upon layers of managers who spend all day scheduling meetings with each other to discuss the work the rest of us will be doing. Outside of Engineering, raises and promotions are given to the loudest voices only, rewarding incompetence and unearned confidence while fostering resentment in other employees. No follow through on employee engagement initiatives. Everyone knows morale is low across the company and yet nothing changes. After the first engagement survey, the execs were meant to work on improvements. When the second survey went out, suddenly it was the teams’ responsibility to make things better for themselves. Tell me, how are we supposed to do that when the issue is management? Nowhere to voice complaints. HR is there to defend the business, managers are there to defend each other. Unhappy employees can "vote with their feet".

Pros

Nice office in a cool location. Relaxed atmosphere

Cons

Really low pay. No bonus. No pay rise. They are way off the current market in this area, and there is no chance of getting a bonus. In over 3 years the company never paid one. They used to be all about training staff internally and giving opportunity to progress. This is now almost none existant Constant high turnover of staff makes it hard to form strong teams There are several stakeholders for every project, which makes it very hard to get a single clear and consistent picture on what and where a product should be
