As the saying goes, "it's not what you know but who you know". The manager I had was not qualified for the role, given that she had no prior experience as a manager, but I knew she was close with the upper management people. She set unrealistic expectations, hid behind fake smiles in silence (I had asked specifically on my work performance), then ambushed me with HR mediation out of the blue with no prior warning, saying that HR was just there to facilitate. Needless to say, HR sided with her and her reporting manager (whom I invited as a neutral party to hear both sides of the story) didn't seem to care. She is one who "makes a mountain out of a molehole" as the points raised were mostly circled on one particular day's event eg: not responding to her email within 10 mins. I knew of some colleagues who had their managers' support even when they had made major mistakes. It's true what I've seen in reviews that this company hires and fires at will. If your manager likes you, you're safe. If not, you're out. I would have enjoyed working there, but definitely not for an unqualified manager like her.
