Pros
The reasons to work for T-Mobile retail used to be numerous. There are very few left. The benefits packages is still one of the best in retail and to some degree, the company (at least the management in my division) still understands the need for a work - life balance. The hours are no worse than any other retail company, and in fact in some stores, the hours have decreased. We pay our managers a good base salary vs. other retail companies but it's been increasingly difficult for them to attain their commissions and bonuses. The best retail reps that we have could make significantly more money outside of retail.
Cons
The company culture that used to be so prevalent (and the reason that most people really enjoyed working for T-Mobile) has completely vanished within the retail arena. About a year ago, new Divisional Director positions were created, and instead of moving top performers from the company into these positions, 18 of the 22 new positions were filled with outside managers. These managers had no wireless experience whatsoever, having come from places such as the Gap, Talbots, Hot Topic, and other companies that had nothing to do with traditional wireless. Several of the Divisional Directors are from the Gap, as well as Regional VPs and the VP of Stores. Interesting choice, since management at the Gap is notoriously poor. Yet these are now the people running T-Mobile. Sadly, they've brought their Gap management styles (and many other Gap underlings) with them and the corporate culture has done a 180. Senior leadership went on a crusade to "reinvent" retail, but in reality nothing has changed. Morale is the worst that I've seen it in my ten years with the company dating back to a previous company before T-Mobile acquired it. Many of the Market Managers have been offered the opportunity to resign with a severance package (and those that don't "accept" this offer are fired within two months). It's no longer an atmosphere conducive to production, and the company is bordering on the precipice of becoming irrelevant.
