Pros

Co-workers are great, but unfortunately no time to talk with them. Decent pay.

Cons

Workloads for Case Managers are extremely high and impossible to meet the expectations. High stress and high demand every single day. Metrics make absolutely no sense and they don't measure what should be measured and are impossible to meet Very poor in their business strategies A top down leadership structure. Command and demand style. Caseloads are so high that they are just not managed correctly at all and many case managers take 'short cuts' to meet the impossible metrics but do poor quality work...and those are the ones promoted; not that there is much room for promotion. The only next step would be a Team Leader and they never leave because their job is too cushy, while the Case Managers are overworked on a daily basis. No real opportunity for advancement for Case Managers and no opportunity to work on other projects. Staff benefits aren't as great as they should be for a leading benefits company High turnover. My team saw a 50% turnover in a year. There has always been at least one person on stress leave on my small team since I started because of the ridiculous demands and processes No culture at the Vancouver office. Staff are just too busy to get to know one another and just leave once the day ends

Pros

They are one of Canada's most reputable companies, and have some good things in place that can make working there enjoyable such as shared ownership plan, benefits, annual bonus and pension (partial) matching.

Cons

The gap between the vision of executive leadership and senior leaders is significant. Senior leaders do not know how to connect with and lead other leaders which has a trickle down effect to staff. For example the idea of creating a safe and inclusive environment; it sounds great and attractive as it's a current societal goal but they have no idea how to bring that culture to life. During my ~4 years as a leader I saw the steady erosion of morale and motivation as a direct result. My ability to support and empower staff was greatly limited due to this. They say they are pay for performance, but they are not. Bonuses are determined based on a bell-curve and overall performance has little to do with bonus payout. Additionally, salaries are incredibly low compared to similar companies in similar geographies. The work environment is not psychologically safe. If you do not share a popular opinion it is not valued or fully heard. Senior leaders greatly lack any form of emotional intelligence. Advancement is massively challenging. They do not promote; despite doing the work of a senior role you must apply and then you must navigate the political waters and agendas of others; your performance has little to do with where you can go within the organization.

Pros

Not so much a pro, but neutral, Canada Life is pretty on par with the other 2 major insurance providers I've worked for. They expect a lot of you, and generally push people stay caught up on work but they also overload staff. Being able to actually keep up with work is unusual and results in praise and recognition in the form of a pat on the back.

Cons

Little to no, company culture. The vibe is very much get your work done and as soon as it hits 5pm, log out and leave. Mostly everyone is there for the paycheque and few take any passion in their work. Their systems are incredibly old and in need of updating. When I left at the end of 2021, they were dangling the carrot they had just finished updating one system that was 20yrs old to a system that is already 10yrs out of date. The training for this role was lengthy and detailed but very textbook oriented and NOT hands-on at all. When I was finally assigned files, I felt like I was back on day 1.
