Are you an experienced engineer with a passion for manufacturing excellence? Hynds is looking for a skilled Production Engineer to join our Christchurch team and play a lead technical role in our precast concrete production operation.
About the Role
Reporting to the Production Manager, you'll be the go-to technical expert on site — supporting production teams to manufacture precast products safely, accurately, and to specification. A key focus of this role is leading the manufacture of M-Specials (custom precast items), from mould design and reinforcement through to quality sign-off and despatch.
You'll work closely with supervisors, maintenance, quality, and sales teams, and occasionally liaise directly with customers and their technical representatives.
What You'll Be Doing
- Providing hands-on technical support across all production teams for manual and mechanised casting operations
- Leading the end-to-end manufacture of M-Special precast items — including safe work methods, mould fabrication, quality controls, and storage
- Interpreting shop drawings and ensuring compliance with NZS3101, NZS3109, NZS4058 and other relevant standards
- Reviewing and developing SOPs, and delivering training and coaching to supervisors and production staff
- Using CAD software to open and edit shop drawings for variation approval and shop floor manufacture
- Reviewing non-conforming products and managing remedial and sign-off processes
- Driving continuous improvement across labour utilisation, reject rates, BOM accuracy, and unit production costs
- Championing health, safety, and housekeeping standards — helping maintain Canada Crescent as a model factory
- Contributing to production reporting and DTP (Delivery to Promise) KPI tracking
What You'll Bring
- Engineering degree (Civil or Construction)
- 3–5 years' experience in a precast or manufacturing production environment
- Strong knowledge of reinforcing steel, concrete production, and relevant NZ standards
- Experience with process improvement and operational excellence methodologies (including 5S)
- Solid CAD skills and proficiency in MS Office
- Strong report writing and communication skills
- A methodical, solutions-focused approach to problem-solving
- A collaborative team attitude with excellent relationship management skills
