      Operations Manager Interview

      10 Oct 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Johannesburg
      No offer

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Uber (Johannesburg) in Sept 2016

      Interview

In July 16, I applied for an operations manager role for UberEATS launching in my city. A HR representative sent me an email mid-Sept on Sunday 8pm to let me know that I need to complete an excel test online by Wednesday evening 12am midnight. I really wanted the job and was grateful for a shot at it so I practiced hard starting from Sunday night till Monday evening and wrote the test on Tuesday evening after a long day of work. I decided to write the test a day earlier as the email did not say 12am on which time zone and I didn't want to be disqualified as a result of submitting the results late. The test was actually not too bad. My current job requires me to do a lot of work on excel, especially on pivot tables and vlookups and those were the skill set they seem to be looking for. I think they were testing whether you can distill information from a table of data to solve problems. As long as you can summarise the data within a table in excel, you are going to do well. There were a few question in the test related to short essays, which I guess test your creativity on how to solve problems if you were running a startup. As long as you come up with an answer and can back it up with some rationale, I think you will be fine. I completed my test with 15 minutes extra time. By Tuesday the following week, someone from Uber's office contacted me to ask me for an available time for a video interview. It was for Friday in the same week and I accepted it immediately, excited for the opportunity to interview. During the video interview, the connection to the video chat was not strong enough and occasionally, we could not hear what each other was saying. My suggestion for all those who are completing video interviews is that you should try connecting to the interview in an area with a strong data connection. The interviewer asked me a couple of questions that were quite generic and the questions could be found on Glassdoor. My suggestion is for you to read through other people's reviews of their interview and pick out questions from their interview to practice on before you go for an interview. I had prepared quite well before my interview so I though I did quite well. I waited for a week after the interview for invitations for following up interviews. On the following Friday after my previous Friday's interview, I decided to contact HR to find out if I was going to proceed in my application. 3 hours later, HR came back to me saying unfortunately, the role has already been filled. This was on the 23 Sept 16. UberEATS launched in my city now at the beginning of October 2016, so I guess they managed to hire someone with a shorter notice period than my 30 days notice period to start the initiative here. I was disappointed as I was really passionate about the opportunity at UberEATS but will keep an eye out for future opportunities and will apply again to Uber in the future. I also sent an email to my interviewer to thank her for spending her time interviewing me.

      Application

      Interview

Five to seven rounds of interviews, tests and presentations just to get a “no, thank you” at the end without much of a feedback. Acceptable for regular recruitment but not after weeks dedicated to the process.

      Application

I interviewed at Uber (Chicago, IL)

      Interview

Pretty easy at early stages - just need to know about supply and demand basics. Analytics test is harder, but manageable if you know Excel well. They are definitely interested in your problem solving abilities and ability to "get things done" with minimal supervision.
