      I interviewed at Tripadvisor

      Interview

I applied for a Creative position in the Singapore Tripadvisor office, and got a email reply from their recruitment manager based in Boston within 3 days. I was delighted to have been shortlisted, however, this delight evaporated quickly. After receiving the email, I was invited to speak to the Boston HR recruitment manager through a video call. On the day of the call, I was informed by herself she couldn't make it, and was sent a email of some questions for me to fill up. I promptly did, and my response was satisfactory enough to be granted access to the next step of the interview: Two 30-minute video calls with 2 stakeholders in the Singapore office - with a Director and a VP. A HR personnel from Singapore contacted me to set up these 2 back-to-back meetings, and all was good. Process so far was good, and Recruitment Manger in Boston and HR personnel in Singapore were nice. On the day of the interview with the 2 stakeholders, VP had to reschedule to a later time due to conflict in schedule, which was alright, totally understandable. Began my first interview with the Director on time. Interview was standard, but got the feeling that interviewer wasn't really keen. Asked about who will I be working under, since Tripadvisor is also hiring a Creative Director and Design Director at the same time. Was informed that even though Tripadvisor put up hiring notices for Creative Director, Design Director and Associate Creative Director, they are only looking at hiring one of them. As this was a creative position and I was really keen to work for Tripadvisor, I had prepared a simple proposal that I wanted to send across to share some of my thoughts and ideas for Tripadvisor. I asked if i could send it over to him. The Director replied that HR will send it to him if it's relevant. Disappointed as I was unsure that the proposal I spent 2 days preparing, were ever reach the hiring team. At the stroke of 30 minutes, interviewer had to leave, and also informed me that the rescheduled meeting with the VP that was happening in 30 minutes, will not happen as she had to handle other matters. I asked if I could set up a time to reschedule with her later on. Was told that I would be informed iF there is a reschedule. Call ended. I checked with the HR, and HR informed that the VP is indeed unable to attend the meeting later in 30 minutes. I asked if i could reschedule, and i could do any time that the VP was available. Had no replies. After a few days, I sent an email to ask if there's any free slot in the VP's schedule next week or any available time, I would make it happen. Had no replies. I then proceeded to send a email to the Boston HR personnel to check if she could help me have a look at this. Appreciated that she replied me very promptly. I was told that I had been removed from consideration, without having the scheduled chance to speak to the VP, or at least attend both meetings to stake my claim or view my proposal. The candidates had already been decided. This experience has made me disappointed at the treatment of the candidates who would love to work for Tripadvisor. I totally understand that this is a testing period, and Tripadvisor is going though trying times and are busy fighting. What I cannot accept, is not being able to even meet the shortlisted candidates, and just leave them hanging there. I would have totally accepted that I may not have been the best candidate for the position, but I cannot understand an organisation like Tripadvisor, who pride themselves on their culture, not giving everyone a fair chance before decisions are made. All the best
