      Director Interview

      16 Mar 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Oracle (Seattle, WA) in Feb 2021

      Interview

The whole process took just over 3 weeks. I was contacted for a role I applied for on the website. I spoke with a recruiter who scheduled a call with the hiring manager the next day. I then spoke to a pair of peer-level members of the team a couple days later. Up to this point, everything was very typical. After that, I was scheduled for a panel interview where I was to meet 7 members of the team I would be managing. This was extremely strange to me as I've never heard of anyone interviewing their potential manager. Additionally, I was asked to present a case study, but was given no information on what to present other than to 'talk about some of the things you've done'. I was told that the panel would be casual, and a 'they get to know you. you get to know them.' kind of thing with me presenting on my case studies followed by questions. I spent a week putting together 2 case studies to talk through. When the call started, they immediately told me to 'give my schpiel' without asking any questions. I presented over zoom for nearly 40 minutes, trying to engage the group, and asking for questions along the way, which they declined. I got to the end of my presentation and asked again for questions. They asked 2, which I answered. Then they asked me to leave, so they could ‘talk about me’. I followed up for feedback, but did not hear back until they asked to schedule another interview with the hiring manager’s manager a week later. I assumed it went well, but over a week after that last round, I have reached out twice to the recruiting team for feedback and to check in, and have been completely ghosted. I guess they found someone else. Personally I feel insulted at the lack of respect for someone whose last round had them speaking to an SVP.

      Interview

The recruitment process was a labyrinthine affair, characterized by a multi-layered structure that stretched across a couple of months. Weeks would pass between leaving me in the dark. While the technical interviews were generally straightforward and objective, the process was further complicated by the inclusion of what appeared to be politically charged and psychologically probing interviews, albeit disguised under various euphemistic titles. These latter stages were subjective assessments, leaving me feeling vulnerable to the whims and biases of the interviewers. The lack of transparency and the prolonged periods of silence created a sense of unease, transforming what should have been an exciting opportunity in an established organization.

The process was very straightforward and took 4 weeks from beginning to end. Recruiter was extremely helpful and explained the process thoroughly. Spoke with several folks from the development team, and also the marketing team leads.
