      Legal Intern Interview

      19 Feb 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Mapiq in Aug 2022

      Interview

Description of interviews: Interview with HR was normal, relaxed. She made me feel comfortable and asked relevant questions about my legal background. Interview with Legal Counsel was different, I was much more tense of course. She asked me about my background, my thesis, my interest in data protection law. All in all, I liked her, although she then asked me specific questions that I found difficult. One example: how to do a data protection impact assessment. No one at the university or during my previous internship explained that. I answered with what I knew and deduced. Her response was to point out what I had forgotten. Which fits. But she did it in a very cold and detached way, I felt 'incompetent'. (Here I want stress that I am still a student and that these precise things are not in the syllabus of almost any university course in general, and I confirm in none of the ones I took.) Only after a while, perhaps seeing the disappointment on my face, does she say: don't worry, it's normal not to know them, after a few days of working on them you learn everything right away. Description of the procedure: After sending the CV, HR contacted me 3 days later on LinkedIn and I scheduled the interview through a website. 2 days after I had the interview with HR, I spoke with Legal Counsel. They asked for a full-time internship position (min. 4 days per week) and at the same time for me to be a university student (am I not the only one who sees the contradiction?). In the job description it was also mentioned that there would be the possibility of employment after the internship. So, I ask whether - in the event that I had made myself available for full-time and I was, as a result, a few exams behind - I could still have the possibility of being hired after the internship, remaining a student, and being available 'part-time'. I am told by both (HR and Legal Counsel) that they would let me know. After few days waiting, HR tells me that Legal Counsel is on holiday for two weeks. So 24 August interview with Legal Counsel, 20 September I receive email: "Yesterday we had a meeting and it seems like we cannot promise a legal position after completing the internship [...] . Considering this, would you still be interested in the full-time internship (min. 4 days per week)?" I answer by saying that if they still require the 'October-November' period, I could not give the availability because without the promise of subsequent employment it was not worth it. However, I mention that from January I finish all my exams and could remain available. They reply: "Actually February 2023 might even be a better time [..]. Shall we stay in touch? [..]". Of course, I say yes. I sent two follow-up e-mails about the position: ghosted. No explanation was ever given. It is now mid-February 2023, which is why I feel I can write this review. Now I feel that I was treated disrespectfully.
