I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Equinox (Boston, MA) in Apr 2017
Interview
I have now interviewed with this company on 3 occasions, and I have found them to be unprofessional and arrogant. I'm starting to wonder if it's part of the brand.
1. I was asked to offer some times for a phone interview, which I did. Rather than receiving a time, I heard from one of their lead therapists, who asked me to come in for a face-to-face and a hands-on. It wasn't so much of an interview as it was him badgering me. He rephrased the same question several times even though I had answered adequately. I mentally checked out about 2/3 of the way through. He didn't give me an opportunity to ask questions, but he did want to proceed to the hands-on. I indicated that I had some questions, to which he replied I could ask them during the hands-on. I should have left but thought I could impress him. He didn't hold still during the session. It's hard to ask questions and perform a quality massage at the same time. He didn't seem to care. I couldn't wait to leave.
2. Someone contacted me through my resume on Indeed. We arranged a time for a phone interview. I rushed home from a meeting, spread out my notes, and she never called. I didn't have a number for her. I sent her an email and got an out-of-office reply. I mentioned this to a friend who works there, and a few days later I got a reply from a different person asking for a phone interview. We arranged that, and her first question was why I chose to apply to Equinox. I found a polite way to tell her they contacted me. She didn't seem to have any intention of hiring me, as if she was just going through the motions.
3. I was visiting a friend of mine across the country in a state I'm considering moving to. I have a contact at Equinox out there that I met on LinkedIn. He agreed to meet with me briefly and said he'd get back to me on a time. After that he ignored my texts and emails, so we never met.

Question 1
I see that you teach massage therapy. What would you do if you had a fellow therapist with no interest in hearing your input?

Unpaid 45-Minute Massage Demo — Evaluated by Non-LMT
Experience:
I interviewed for a Licensed Massage Therapist position at Equinox's Wisconsin Ave location and was disappointed by how the process was handled. Despite being a licensed LMT (DC) and graduate of a respected massage therapy institute, I was required to perform a 45-minute unpaid massage session as part of a "demo" — which is far beyond what most professionals consider appropriate.
I clearly communicated that I only offer 25–30 minute demos as a professional boundary. This was disregarded, and I was pressured into a longer session.
What concerned me most was that my hands-on skills were evaluated by a licensed esthetician, not a fellow LMT. This raises serious scope-of-practice questions. After the session, I received no meaningful feedback and was simply sent a generic rejection email.
The demo seemed to benefit the staff more than it served as a legitimate skills assessment, which left me questioning whether this is a pattern of extracting free labor under the guise of hiring. As a new LMT working hard to protect my body and time, this process felt exploitative and disrespectful.
I’ve submitted a formal complaint to the DC Board of Massage Therapy and encourage Equinox to revisit its hiring practices for wellness professionals.
