      Software Engineer Interview

      18 Jun 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at AppDynamics (San Francisco, CA) in May 2014

      Interview

I applied through angelist and was contacted by the recruiter within few days for specific teams in which I was interested. I did a phone interview with one team but that position got filled up so I had to go through one more telephonic round with another team. I was graduating in the same month so my schedule was really busy but the recruiter was really flexible and helpful throughout the process. Frankly, one of the best recruiter I have worked with. At every point of the process I knew what was going on and when will I hear back. They also asked me to take a coding challenge to see my coding skills but since I was really occupied completing my courses and projects for graduation I asked them to see my work on GitHub and they were flexible enough on this. After telephonic intrviews and github profile analysis they flew me down to SF for onsite interviews and gave me one night of accommodation. For the onsite interviews I had around 5 or 6 face-to- face interviews with people at different level like software engineer, architects, managers etc. The interview questions were same as a typical software engineering interviews. Just the basic data structures, algorithms and design skills. But I found almost all questions a bit design oriented where you have to think of the solution on your own rather than typical find the longest subsequence or finding the inorder successor etc. Overall, the questions were under moderate level, nothing which a computer science graduate cannot solve. They offer you lunch in middle of the interview session where you grab lunch and have your lunch while interviewing with someone. Though it helps to think about the interview as normal communication where you are having lunch while talking about the solution or answering questions but it’s a bit difficult for the interviewee to eat when he has to do majority of talking. I had my lunch interview with an architect who had a ton of experience in Hadoop and Big Data processing. We had a great conversation where we talked about synchronization issues, singleton patterns, a bit of computer architecture and a file based sql type query design question. Overall, this interview was the most intellectual and fun. They have a really beautiful office space, free snacks and an open bar (though I didn’t see anyone drinking :D) They came back to me with an offer the very next day as I had few other offer deadlines. We negotiated the offer a bit. The recruiter was really helpful and communicative through the whole negotiation she also set me up to talk to the manager about the whole thing but in the end it didn’t worked out. I got a better offer from an early stage startup, which was giving me much more equity in the company and also a better salary (though the salary difference was not a major concerns for me) so I decided to go ahead with them. Lets see how it works out. Overall, the whole interview process was a great experience. The company has some really great engineers and working on challenging problems and I will love to work with them in future if our paths cross again.

      Interview

Clear and cogent process, but it takes time. Had a initial Hiring Manager round, then a standard coding round, then 4 onsite rounds. Onsite round was a mix of problem solving, system design and API implementations. Everyone was super friendly throughout and never made me nervous.
