      Senior Product Manager Interview

      25 Jul 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Luxembourg
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Luxembourg) in Jul 2018

      Interview

The Amazon Interview Process is different in some ways compared to general interview practises. The screening and interviews are based on Amazon Principles and if one can prepare in advance and relate several experiences with the Principles this would cover 70% of the interview preparation. I had to go through the following rounds : - Telephonic Screening to know background/experience, interest in available position, etc. I was asked for the current Salary and after having answered that without a 2nd thought in the call, i realised that perhaps i should not have done that. Quickly reading online, i found out that Amazon had sent a communication in beginning of 2018 to all their recruiter that salary should not be asked to candidates and offers should be competitive as per market standards and candidates ability. I regretted it as my current compensation was way lower than what glassdoor figures said about average or minimum compensation for the role at Amazon. - 1st Round of Interview based on Principles. I was asked 2 questions, where in each answer was further probed to detail out the S-T-A-R and verify my answer with several different questions. The interviewer was very detailed, and tried to understand my answers if not clear enough by asking more questions. The interviewer was polite and very professional in her communication and seemed to understand the processes explained by me which were relevant to the questions asked. This interview lasted for 45 minutes. - The recruiter informed me that the next steps would be an online assessment and hiring manager interview. - 2nd Round of Interview was with a hiring manager and scheduled for 1 hours, though the interviewer seemed to be in a hurry and finished the interview in 30 minutes or by asking 2 questions related to Amazon Principles. The interviewer did not seem to understand some of the answers given by me, though I explained exactly the same situation/process as the previous round of interview. The question was related to trade-offs done in product features to achieve quick wins. But the answer given by me related to ability to launch the product ahead of competition sooner though with some less features and hence with inability to handle some rare scenarios which could result in small percentage of traffic being lost - was not understood by the interviewer and she tried to question several times how this could be a trade off. The interviewer asked about my eligibility to work in the country where the role was based and ended the interview saying the recruiter would contact me soon with feedback. The interviewer sounded a bit un-interested since the beginning and also interrupted me when i tried to introduce myself, when i tried to ask about the role/team etc seemingly trying to quickly finish the call which was scheduled late evening on her request. Having this feeling, I could not ask more questions that I initially wished to know more about the position, work, etc. - online quantitative assessment : This was the 2nd last round, after which it would be decided if I could qualify for a final f2f round at the Amazon office. The test was adaptive and started off fairly easy and quickly became quite complex. There were charts/graphs on which there were 3-4 questions asked further. The test lasted for about 1 hour with about 4-5 graphs/charts that were not so easy to solve within a few minutes. Overall feeling after the test was good, and I was confident about the score that it should be above average. After the last 2 steps interview/test i was told that they would not be continuing with my application. They did not shared any feedback, until I insisted when they told me that they are unable to share any data/feedback and just felt that they needed a different profile type for the role and encouraged me to apply for more roles that suited my profile. The whole process took about 5 weeks. The interview process was an unique experience and the preparation was interesting for having to think everything I have done in past, and how it fit in the Amazon principles of good leadership skills. Except for the hiring manager's tone of voice and minimal interest shown in the interview - i felt it was overall a good experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. When was it that you did more than what was expected from you ? what was the outcome ? 2. Did you have to uncover several layers of complexity to reach the bottom of a problem ? what was it ? why did you do xyz, why didn't you do abc ? 2. Have you ever launched a product/feature, if yes how you measured the success ? 3. Have you ever had to do a trade off while launching a product ? what was it ?
