How are the career development opportunities at Tesco?

      Pros

Great culture and work/ life balance, supportive management style, clear career progression support

      Cons

No compensation for transport despite isolated location in Welwyn Garden city, some of the engineering work could have been more intellectually stimulating, could have had better integration of interns into the wider teams beyond direct management

      Pros

Pros: Tesco is genuinely a supportive and well-run place to work. Management communicates clearly, expectations are fair, and the atmosphere on the shop floor is positive. Training is thorough and you’re never left feeling out of your depth. There are also real progression opportunities if you want to move up, and plenty of flexibility with shifts which makes work–life balance much easier. The colleague discount is a brilliant bonus, and the wider benefits package is better than most other retailers. Cons: Advice to Management:

      Cons

Retail can be busy, especially around holidays, but that’s to be expected. As long as you’re organised, it’s completely manageable.

Decent job for students, not good for long term career

      Pros

They let me come back seasonally as a uni student, meant I could pick up some easy money between terms Worked in fresh food, overall not a bad job if you like routine and physical work

      Cons

Hours are incredibly unstable, I am only contracted one day so if there's no overtime I make no money and my schedule changes every week so it's hard to plan things However, when there's a lot of overtime you're expected to work all the busy periods i.e bank holidays, christmas eve, boxing day etc Basically no career progression, they cut loads of management roles so only option is to become a shift leader which is a lot of work for not much increase in pay

      Tesco- Checkout Operator

      Pros

Stable Job with Regular Hours – Tesco is a large, well-established company that offers job stability and predictable working hours. Flexible Work Schedules – Part-time and full-time shifts are available, making it a good option for students, parents, or those needing work-life balance. Employee Discounts – Tesco employees often receive staff discounts on groceries and other products, helping them save money. Opportunity for Career Growth – Tesco offers internal promotions, meaning employees can move up to supervisor or management positions. Training Provided – No prior experience is required as Tesco provides training on the till system, customer service, and handling transactions.

      Cons

Repetitive Work – Scanning items, handling payments, and repeating the same tasks can become monotonous over time. Dealing with Difficult Customers – Some customers may be rude, impatient, or difficult to handle, which can be stressful. Standing for Long Hours – Checkout operators are often required to stand for most of their shift, which can cause fatigue or discomfort. Pressure to Work Quickly – There may be targets for speed and efficiency, making the job stressful during busy periods.

      Good for students (student perspective)

      Customer service assistant
      Current employee

      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Weekend shifts, and backshits during a weekday can work around your college/university timetable. My managers showed support to me allowing me to drop and change shifts to work around my timetables as they changed each term. - The skills you get are transferable: communication, team work, planning and organising, working as an individual, time management, handling multiple tasks and deadlines. - Colleagues are able to take on extra responsibility by becoming team leaders; furthermore, if your desired career path is in retail management, Tesco offer graduate programmes, as well as an internal 'options' programme for colleagues to train and transition to management positions. - Plenty of overtime available to boost your income over the Xmas and summer periods when you are off.

      Cons

      - There is still the chance of a clash of interests. If overtime is not voluntarily picked up then management may randomly select (as per availability) colleagues to work the overtime to meet business needs. - Late finishes (10pm to 12am) may not be ideal if you are up early the next day for classes. - Work/life balance will be impacted, and you will look forward to (perhaps rely on) using your annual leave to catch up with friends and let off steam.

Outdated culture with serious diversity and progression issues

      Business outlook

      Pros

Large organisation with significant scale and exposure to complex supply chain operations. Some colleagues are hardworking and supportive despite the wider organisational challenges.

      Cons

Very limited career progression for diverse employees and a culture that can feel exclusionary. Leadership often appears disconnected from the day-to-day reality experienced by staff. The organisation feels outdated and resistant to change, with bureaucracy slowing down progress and innovation. Concerns around fairness and inclusion are not always taken seriously.
