EMEA insider culture review

Pros

1) The culture in the EMEA offices is that of a proper startup. Yes, there are challenges at such an early stage, however, the caliber of people we work with is exceptional, especially at such an early stage. 2) Management give a huge amount of room for creativity, diversity of thought whilst leverage other international offices. 3) In the startup world, you normally work with US HQ, so very refreshing to experience a different culture with Beijing driving global expansion. The way ofo are structuring the regional offices, with accountability for the region. 4) Functional teams at regional level empower city operations to drive and empower local operations. 5) Mission driven: ofo has a great potential to fundamentally drive better, greener mobility options for cities, reducing pollution and congestion.

Cons

1) Being very early, you can see that not all processes are built - however, that's part of the fun in joining such an early stage company. 2) Playbooks are in chinese, currently in the process of updating and rolling out english versions - still part of the fun!

Massive improvements needed

Pros

Dress is causal, you can come into work in a t-shirt and shorts. Hours are flexible, can work from home, leave early and come in late but this does go both ways, expect to work late some days

Cons

No room for creativity, experimentation or understanding that markets are different, if it works in one city then all other cities around the region must follow the same process. Senior management can be extremely aggressive and expect a high staff turn over, because of this job security can be quite poor. They are not willing to listen to criticism or hear suggestions from local staff within the operational city. Overall communication between head regional office to other offices as well as communication from management down is terrible and almost non-existent, this is includes expectations, changes in roles and the role itself

Pros

The the US team was EXCEPTIONALLY strong with lots of highly experience senior management and a good number of ex-Uber people. The team was highly collaborative and everyone was dedicated to the long term success of the US market. We made major in roads in a very short period of time with unicorn growth numbers quarter over quarter.

Cons

China. That's it. China. They are secretive and had zero trust in the US team, including it's leaders. They always assumed the US was trying to steal or cheat them somehow. Decision making to MONTHS on even the simplest of things and they required sometimes 8+ approvals for a 1k spend. Members of the China HQ were often abusive in tone and language and would out and out lie to us. They didn't pay vendors so individual employees were personally harassed and threatened by vendors that they would be sued. The way they did business was unscrupulous and dishonest at best. And the US team grew increasingly frustrated and disenchanted with HQ. In the end, they laid off the US leadership in favor of junior folks with no experience because they were Chinese and have childhood relationships with the CEO. Oh, and the Chinese app is now running propaganda for the Chinese Communist party. What's left are a handful of employees who are all looking for new jobs.
