Pros

I grew a lot at Via. I had the opportunity to take on all kinds of really interesting projects and saw a lot of growth in my role, my responsibilities, and even my pay-- in spite of the strange HR situation. I made some great friends!

Cons

I say this as someone who received three raises in a year and a half: the HR situation is deeply shady/unprofessional and everyone knows it, including senior management. Via has made a choice to not give raises for inflation, to not have a standard review/performance management process, to not engage in DEI best practices, and to handle leveling in a way that is deeply inequitable. When I delivered some feedback about this after many junior women came to me with concerns, I was told that I was not demonstrating positive leadership and that in order to advance at the company, I would need to get on board. I was a "top performer" until the moment I spoke out. While I left on my own terms, I watched people get pushed out in really bizarre ways for simply speaking up about company culture. It is common for people to be gaslit by HR when they raise a concern -- I was, repeatedly. This is wrong and more "top performers" should say something about it.

Innovative product but poorly managed

Pros

You can learn a lot, really quickly. You're expected to hit the ground running and no one will be there to guide you, the job can be what you make of it. Smart and kind coworkers. Cool product and great mission.

Cons

The company doesn't care about its employees at all. Turnover is extremely high, and management refuses to change anything despite feedback. Via spends an exorbitant amount of resources on hiring but does nothing about retention. If anything, loyalty feels disincentivized. Compensation is way below market price, and the constant pitch "we reward hard work when we see it" is just a nice way to phrase that there's no promotion or raise processes. Most people wait and fight for up to a year before getting burned out. The only thing you will be rewarded with is more work from people who have left. Senior management decisions and the politics of this company are questionable (announcing acquisitions while raises have been put on pause for months), and good luck if you have any concerns you want to bring to HR as it's run by three close friends. No company culture, ERGs or any work sponsored event seem to be employee driven. Via takes advantage of employees' emotional labor. Also, lack of diversity, there's only three POC in any senior positions. HR addressed this during the interview process as "we're working on it", but have yet to see any effort.

Horror - Worst Place I've Ever Worked

Pros

Some of the concepts around public mobility at Via are really compelling, and I was drawn in by the ideas they pitched.

Cons

No transparency from the executive team, all talk or DEI is just lip service. When I wanted to talk in my team meeting about how I was feeling about the George Floyd protest I was told "to shut up unless I had something positive to say" and this is absolutely the company line. When people asked when their raises and promotions were planning to be readdressed they were told to stop whining, even when it was disproportionately POC who were left behind in promotion. There is absolutely no internal clarity on people related matters, and the CEO surrounds himself with yes men. There is no place at Via to be in any way critical of the CEO. Hands down the most toxic work environment I've ever been a part of.
