Pros

You get exposure to various case types.

Cons

The internal structure and management practices significantly impact the overall experience. The firm lacks clear systems for workflow, communication, and feedback. Expectations are unclear and misaligned with the level of guidance provided, which creates challenges for employees. There is a high degree of autonomy, but without consistent mentorship or structured oversight to support development. The lack of structured training and meaningful knowledge transfer creates challenges for individuals new to immigration or new to the firm. The managing partner’s expectations are unrealistic, thus the work environment is difficult to navigate as a result. Constructive and supported feedback is not offered and communications are reactive rather as opposed to providing proactive expectations. In some instances, internal feedback and characterizations of work may feel inconsistent or difficult to reconcile with expectations, which can further contribute to uncertainty around performance standards. Overall, this environment may not work for individuals seeking mentorship, clarity in expectations, and a more collaborative/supportive atmosphere.

Pros

Working at USILAW has been such a wonderful opportunity, and I have learned so much while working here. The team here is incredibly dynamic, and there are so many different people to learn from. The firm touches every aspect of immigration law, and therefore, you can learn anything and everything you want to. The learning opportunities are truly endless. From the moment I started working here, I was greeted with warmth and a sense of belonging . The firm is small, and therefore, brings a close-knit family culture to it. It is very different from a big firm, and in the best way possible. Everyone is super helpful, kind, and encouraging. The majority of the people who work here come from immigrant backgrounds, and you cannot ask for anything better in an immigration firm. Everyone there truly cares about the immigration process, and doing what is best for any immigration petition they touch. It is genuinely a lovely place to work at!
