Ex-pats beware

Pros

Great place to learn new software techniques and processes . Having UNStudio on your resume is good career booster.

Cons

Office is a lot more corporate than people think. Most of the work they do is the same you would find in a commercial office that would pay double of what UNS does. Communication is terrible. Late hours are not so much because of deadlines or workload, but because of managerial mistakes / oversights that require you to scramble to cover for them. They take advantage of ex-pats to do the heavy work while the locals leave at 6 religiously (Locals know the laws / system and the office does not push them too much because of it). They will flatly lie to you on details of your pay and benefits to get you in and shrug their shoulders when they don't come through with their promises.

Pros

Learn what not to do if you can handle it for long. Shanghai is a great city.

Cons

Exploitative attitude and unreasonable expected work ethic, a result of the management approach of the office director, who yells and curses at employees hoping that they will follow his wishes unquestionably, without clear initial direction or instruction in the first place. Resultant toxic environment that doesn't foster leadership or nurture creativity within employees who work fearfully, for relatively low pay, with little job satisfaction, and job security.

Pros

Commercial projects that are often seen to completion. Somewhat ambitious design standards. International team atmosphere. Many opportunities for learning and taking on new responsibilities.

Cons

Management is inconsistent, non-systematic, inexperienced, and exploitative. "Command and control" style with seemingly rigid structure, though structure is often undermined by management themselves. Office morale could be described as "disillusioned" at best, and "powerless and oppressed" at worst, with many unhappy and burnt out employees who seem constantly on the verge of quitting. Pay is very low. Expect to be yelled at or requested to perform unreasonable tasks. Prepare for constant, marginally compensated overtime hours.
