Pros

-Amazing mission that attracts people who are truly here for the cause -A leadership team that genuinely cares about its people -Strong company culture and all around great people to work with

Cons

-TMP is not a tech company, it’s a staffing company so the pay is lower than what you see for comparable engineering roles at technology and software startups -Contrary to our branding and external communications, the company is not remote or flex friendly. Prior to the pandemic forcing us to go fully remote, only select strategic hires and the CEO's college friends were allowed to work remotely while everyone else was required to be in the office 4 days a week from 9-5. The team has raised this several times in company town halls only to be dismissed by the executive team with vague explanations and catch all phrases such "we're better together." No one really believes this given that our CTO who runs 3 highly collaborative departments does not live or work in Chicago. Ironically enough the company is now positioning itself as a leader in the future of work and is even providing remote work consulting services.

Minimal Confidence in the Future of this Company

Pros

Work from home, various stipends, good PTO.

Cons

This place is crashing and burning, which is shocking considering that it appeared we were flourishing less than a year ago. I have no idea how they're measuring successes and failures because they have no accurate reporting tools anywhere in the entire org; and they're using that inaccurate data to make business and layoff decisions! Change management is appalling and non-existent. Decisions are made on a whim with nothing being thought through before implementation, resulting in gray areas that teams have to do their best navigating through for days or even weeks following. Goals are constantly changing with no reporting or visibility into how teams are tracking towards them. Middle management (Director level and below) are doing their best to answer teams questions and qualm concerns about the ever-changing environment but C-suite and VP level leaders are in their own little worlds and could seemingly care less about the stress that IC's are under.

The Mom Project Response

We are happy to hear that you've enjoyed some of the benefits of working at The Mom Project including remote work, generous leave policies and our total compensation package, to include our stipends. It is disappointing to hear that you have concerns about the current state of our organization. We recognize the past several months have been a challenging time at The Mom Project as we've had to navigate an unpredictable economy, and this brought significant change to our organization. Our executive team remains engaged and committed to addressing the points you have shared and to rebuilding our company culture in 2023 and beyond. Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback.

The best mission, and the most humiliating layoffs

Pros

- Colleagues are visionary and mission-focused - Flexible scheduling is celebrated - Pay is competitive - WFH stipend

Cons

- Mass spontaneous layoffs with no notice, no derogatory performance remarks, and no time to find a job somewhere else - Standard layoff procedure is via email while simultaneously locking the employee's system so they cannot get closure with their colleagues. When TMP is riding the highs of an economic boom they are celebratory, share success with gifts and lunches, and hire the best talent. It is truly the best place to work. BUT, that bears no weight to how they treated employees that were deemed unnecessary in an economic downturn. I was one of 15% of employees that were simply emailed a note that read "...today is your last day...we will have a conversation with you at some point..." before my system was abruptly shut down and I lost all access. A standard severance meeting was held, and that was it. One day I was happily employed and doing my job, and then next I was staring at a computer I could no longer log in to. For a company that promises to keep moms in the workforce, they sure have a funny way of showing it. The only reason this didn't get one star is because I still believe in the mission, and believe the executive team means well even though the execution of this was abhorrent.
