Pros

The salary was as expected for this type of role and company.

Cons

Unfortunately, there were many. Upon leaving, I did not have a job and was offered a significant raise to stay, but still decided to leave because it was such a poor place to work. Promises made in the interview process were inaccurate and leadership for the customer facing role was untrained, inexperienced, and unprofessional. These inadequacies sadly go far beyond startup growing pains too. Overall, these are the three main areas where Tellius struggled during my tenure: 1. Company culture was terrible. There was no camaraderie or accountability, and the lack of honesty within the company and to the customers was very troubling. 2. Work / life balance was not respected. Management would contact employees during off hours, weekends, holidays, etc. and expect responses to happen immediately, and work to be done then. 3. Product leadership was poor and non-responsive to customer needs, and they actively did not support customer facing roles. Communication was nonexistent, customer input was often not heard on the product roadmap, and progress was extremely slow.

Pros

- Flexibility of working remotely - Employees sometimes brought their dogs into the office - Free lunch when in the office - Compensation - HR is nice and available to employees frequently - Unlimited PTO - CEO & CPO are nice and want good things for the company/product

Cons

- Lack of diversity - Lack of women & LGBTQI+ (especially in leadership) - Lack of support and/or resources for those with a disability, mental health issues, etc. - No clear direction for the company's future - Lack of communication - Inconsistent leadership - Low team moral - Too many "cooks in the kitchen" on all on-going projects - Unclear team organization (which team does what) - Everything is a fire drill with no clear deadlines - Teams are extremely siloed - There are people in management roles that shouldn't be (either they don't know how to manage or have no real interest in managing a team) - Benefits (no 401k matching, no tuition reimbursement or assistance, no training budget, ) - Promotions are given based on years at the company, rather than experience and merit

Struggles with scalability due to leadership

Pros

Great salary and product is interesting

Cons

As with many start ups, those who have been there the longest are promoted into leadership/management positions without any management skills or the desire to manage. There is a severe lack of management or the desire to provide direct and open feedback in the department I was in. Some leaders would blatantly lie or obfuscate the truth to avoid difficult conversations. Often projects or parts of projects would be completed for someone rather than providing communication around what to do differently which prohibits scale. Some efforts to standardize and scale were raised during my time at Tellius, but any feedback on these processes from lower level employees was not received well or implemented by leadership. Tellius also lacks women and LGBTQ representation and does little for bias or sexual harassment training. This is amplified by having no representation in leadership. Moreover, this was an issue in my department with inherent favoritism towards women who had outside work relationships with their superiors.
