Toxic ELT and questionable strategy

Pros

*Working with founders *98% of employees and team members are good people

Cons

2% of the team creates 95% of the issues. And that 2% are the ELT, comprised of mostly large corporate figures who have never started a company, worked with early stage teams, or really even understand the fundamentals of the business. They arrived with their playbooks and assume they are correct. But if you look at the evidence, it's a constant churn cycle these past two years alone where we've lost some of the best MDs, two of the best GMs, and many other great people who are just burnt out or tired of being treated poorly or looked at as "not doing enough". This perspective is quite widely held by accelerator staff - the experience across engineering, legal, etc. is not quite the same. The CEO talks a lot about honest talks and empathy, but you don't see it in her actions. The HC team creates more problems then they do value. And the team that is about the business has the least amount of influence on the direction Techstars takes. It's a far cry from the tenure of David Cohen and what it was like working alongside him and the original executive team closely connected to program teams.

Pros

Getting to work with founders solving interesting problems

Cons

Found out Techstars used to only have 1 program each year per team. Now everyone has 2 - 4 programs each year, but new hires are PAID LESS than what previous PMs made with just 1 program. I wish I asked more people before taking the offer. Leadership has outright said they do not think more programs equates to more work or more pay. You will also never receive any equity in the companies as a Program Manager even though you start earlier and stay later than anyone else on the team. Heed the warnings here about being over worked and under paid. Techstars really takes advantage of their brand name but what might look shiny on the outside is really a toxic work environment on the inside.

New leadership lacks strategy

Pros

Program Managers, Managing Directors and Associates are great - all here believing in the "helping founders succeed" mission, putting in their best work.

Cons

The new CEO is a serious disappointment - all words, no substance. No real strategy or vision. "Growth, growth, growth" is all she talks about. Growth is not a strategy, it's a desired outcome - strategy is how to get there. She doesn't have a strategy for Techstars. There were huge hopes for the new CEO coming in - but nothing changed for the better since she stepped into the role - in fact, it is worse.
