Pros

The people, flexible time off, working for a good cause, and opportunities for learning.

Cons

I’d like address two areas: my experience while working at Switchee and my experience being made redundant by Switchee. While working at Switchee, some of the things that I did enjoy were the flexible time off policy, the opportunities to learn new things, the fact that Switchee is working towards a good cause, and the people at Switchee who for the most part are very smart, lovely people. However this was offset by a few issues. My salary was very low when I joined Switchee, I tried to address this with my manager but the only way I was able to get a meaningful change in salary putting me closer to market value was by leveraging an offer from another company, and after getting this increase I received weird comments from the CEO about my performance (which did not align with feedback from my manager about my performance being good and that he would not know much about anyway as he never worked directly with me or asked me about my team’s work). Another issue at Switchee is that while they promote inclusivity and openness, anytime it actually matters these things are completely disregarded. Some examples of this are Switchee scheduling one of their mandatory retreats during Ramadan, or their extreme secrecy about people leaving the company despite constant requests to be more transparent. The main reason that I would not recommend Switchee as a place to work is really how they handled the redundancies. Switchee announced right before Christmas that a large part of the company would be made redundant. They tried to frame this as a kindness (“we want you to have your support system during these hard times”) despite it being well known that holiday times are often the most difficult times for people’s mental health. To me this was extremely frustrating as it was another example of Switchee framing themselves as open, and kind when everyone would have appreciated the honesty of admitting that the timing was due to financial strains on the company. During the initial stages of the redundancy, Switchee assured us that they would do everything in their power to make the experience as easy as possible. They told us they would consider payment in lieu of notice, flexible end dates, and anything that would help set us up for success however once again this was not my experience. Because of the redundancy I decided to move abroad and because of this requested a payment in lieu of notice for tax purposes, I was denied that and told that actually, nobody would be getting PILONs and that Switchee had made a mistake in telling us that they would even consider it. I also requested a specific end date to make my move abroad easier (and because I found it painful continuing to work with my friends and colleagues knowing that I was being let go), I had already provided ample handover as I had a month’s notice that I was being made redundant however my request for that was also denied. A few more smaller things during the redundancy that I found hurtful were that after nearly 4 years of working at Switchee, I had to set up my own goodbye meeting and my manager did not organize for a card (which was typically done for other employees leaving the company). I also was quite concerned to find out that the person put in charge of the QA department in my place was the device team lead who is a lovely person but has no QA experience whatsoever. Because of how Switchee treated me during the redundancy after almost 4 years of me being dedicated to supporting and improving the company, I cannot recommend it as a place to work.

Pros

The people they hire are some of the best . The product they're creating can definitely benefit the housing industry.

Cons

Switchee's CEO (Adam Fudakowski) is one of the most toxic people I ever worked with. He's a bad manager who doesn't trust his staff unless they studied engineering from oxbridge. He's an elitist and also misogynistic and doesn't trust the women on his team. He was often openly disrespectful and rude to his team. Working with him has given me trauma. His vision for employees at Switchee is a complete farce. Salary - Switchee pay really low salary, not even giving yearly raises. Often making you jump through hoops to get just a cost of living raise.

Pros

Unlimited holidays Company retreats Good benefits

Cons

The team I joined had some very serious problems. The communication in the team was dire. For the first 2 months of my time there, i didn't speak to my manager at all apart from 5 minutes 3 times a week in standups. The person in charge of mentoring me stopped responding to my messages after 2 or 3 weeks and in general was rude and unhelpful, until it was time for my reviews in which he would claim I "can ask him for help whenever" which was not true. I never felt at all accepted, respected or even welcome in the team. There were specific member(s) who were always very helpful and kind, but overall it was really quite unpleasant. Nobody had time to help me with anything, and asking for help seemed to be viewed as sacrilegious and bothersome. It was extremely isolating and took a toll on my mental well being outside of work. Something the overarching company values claims to be of utmost importance to them. They didn't plan sprints / releases in advance, or estimate any tickets. This led to very strange liminal periods in which a sprint / release was code complete but the work for the next one wasn't planned and while the VERY stretched small QA team did regression testing, I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. On top of this, nobody wanted to hear from me so when I did ask for new work I was made to feel like a bother. After 3 months of this happening every release I just gave up trying to get new work in these periods. I raised this in retros every time and it got shut down every time. I even had tickets moved out of sprints/releases while I was working on them with no communication from anyone. Operationally speaking, this was probably the worst engineering team I have ever worked for. I regularly asked for help in our team slack channel and was repetitively completely ignored. Sometimes (if i was lucky) someone would respond a week later when it was no longer relevant. This is a clear symptom of a team lacking in appropriate bandwidth. I was scalded and got in a lot of trouble (and was consequently let go) for struggling to deliver a very large unestimated complex piece of work that was poorly defined and planned. In my review I tried to explain why it was so difficult. I had been in the team for 3 months at this point and had a complete lack of any onboarding or real support during this time. I definitely made mistakes in the task and took responsibility for this but my manager and the previously mentioned "mentor" were incredibly disrespectful. They were convinced this task was simple, as something similar had already been done (which was not correct) and not interested in what I had to say about why it wasn't. Overall it was a horrible and frankly toxic experience.

It saddens me deeply to read this review. As someone who has been helping to make this probation experience successful, I know first-hand the level of support the entire team has invested there. Nevertheless, we have taken your feedback onboard and heard your side of the story. We appreciate the time you have taken to share it. Thank you! Olya People Director
