The most ambitious, fun, and authentic company I've worked for

Pros

It's quite common/trendy for a company to talk about its values - as if stating a set of values automatically means they are recognized and characterized. SquaredUp is the first company I've worked where they are so clearly more than words. "Passion" - A ten year old company, SquaredUp has been persistent with its vision of connecting and surfacing data for better insights. In the last 12 months, the vision has been resparked with a much larger scope and ambition - driving the development of its first SaaS product, which aims to solve a broader challenge and unlock a broader market. This persistent vision and the rejuvenation of it is motivating and exciting. "Integrity" - I've seen consistent under-promising and over-delivering - from the way employees are treated/rewarded to the results the company delivers. Communication is a key aspect... a lot of thought goes into the way goals and decisions are communicated, and with a lot of thought for the team. This makes the company feel very well-aligned and empowered to make decisions/take action. Togetherness - Each aspect of the company knows what the others are doing. We all meet for Friday wrap-ups with each week bringing a theme (a team in the spotlight, a stats update, etc.). In a remote-first world, this has been critical glue. The way the company has handled remote work has been exemplary. The decision to go remote-first wasn't made lightly - weighing a lot of feedback from everyone. And what it means to be remote first has been given a lot of thought. Probably an A+ example of executing this.

Cons

Developing a new product is rarely a straight line (there's a term for bumps in the road ... the "trough of disillusionment"). So it's taken longer than we anticipated to validate product/market fit. But we've made great strides and we've built a killer product, getting a ton of awesome feedback from early customers/analysts. So much of the company's future now depends on the goal of achieving exponential adoption and growth.

Pros

Remote working since 2020. Remote-first environment, remote working is expected and encouraged. Mandatory office days are rare, usually on a yearly basis. Generally comfortable and light on administration. No timesheets or similar issues. Nobody cares much how you work, so long as the work gets done on time and with acceptable levels of quality. Haven't had any issues with management or co-workers. Working experience has been wholly positive there, compared to what I hear about the workplaces of my peers.

Cons

The current product that pays most of the bills is gradually nearing the end of its life. Not by us, but the platform that it is built to support is being phased out. The new product that we're building isn't quite paying the bills yet. We're in a strange state of transition at present (2025)

Thank you for your review of SquaredUp. We really trust our employees to deliver great output which they definitely do. We are continuing to develop SquaredUp Dashboard Server with version 7 due in August 2025 which will include major new developments. SCOM 2025 has also just been released by Microsoft as part of the System Center 2025 suite and although it is less used today, it is still a solid on-premises monitoring solution. Watch this space

Pros

The culture is family-like. Everyone is friendly, considerate, and more than willing to help others but also don't shy away from constructive criticism. Just as importantly actively maintaining this culture is a priority for management (especially the CEO) and the company as a whole. In the engineering team the work is interesting and there is room to find your own niche, you aren't limited by a job description or department. Everyone is passionate about technology and on the ball. You're involved in the full life-cycle, including discussing requirements and solutions, not just working through pre-written Jira tickets. I feel like I can make a difference. Management is trustworthy, actively seeks employee feedback on a regular basis and is generally responsive and supportive. There is a strong sense that everyone from your line manager through HR to the management team in general cares about you as a person, not just an employee. The company is flexible around working from home and working hours. It also has a lot of potential with big plans for the future. Company events are enjoyable - not corporate-style 'mandatory fun'.

Cons

Some of the technology being used isn't the latest and greatest. There isn't always a clear route for progression, though this is being worked on. While it is a good problem to have, rapid growth comes with risks.
