Typical big law firm

Pros

Great opportunity to get exposure on high profile cases and can be quite exciting to watch those cranky partners in action. One thing tho. Please throw your 'work-life balance' dream out of the window - Not going to put this as cons because this is probably the same for all law firms. But what do you expect, you are paid to learn!

Cons

There is NO STRUCTURED pupillage (even if you are told so in the interview) and you will need to be proactive to ask for work from LAs or partners to try out more area of laws within the firm. But, most probably you wouldn't have the capacity to take on other work from other departments once you are primarily assigned to one. So when you were asked to choose your preferred department before you start your pupillage - choose wisely. "Pupils of Shearn make wonders" - you will be expected to produce work by hook or by crook. No one care if you die half way. Hierarchical as usual big firms. Be very careful with your words and actions. Once you plant a bad seed with any LA or partner, you'll have to endure the bad fruit for your remaining time there.

Pros

Pay for pupil is decent.

Cons

1) Office is very dated 2) Toilets make gaza look like Disneyland 3) Shared Task wheel is worst than the wheel of the games of thrones - Calls would be made to the Pupils Pen and Pupils would be requried to accept the task - Pupils would then put the name into the game of spin the wheel, whoever's name it lands on, they would have to do it. - creates a situation where people can game the system and dodge the tasks given -the phone is placed in a position within the old pen that only pupils from that part of the pen will inevitably do more of the picking up compared to others. No system has been put in place among the pupils themselves to ensure there is fairness here. 4)The competition and FOMO suffered by pupils with the brainwashing system of try outs creates unnecessary stress and competition for pupils, making them think that being retained makes u king, not being retained means u are not good enough 5) toxic teams are the worst of the worst. with regards to the 'better' teams, comes with extra pressure to perform and maintain the grind to impress the superiors and higher ups 6)old culture and working style is still very influential here, hence why work life balance is nothing more than a facade 7)weekends and late nights are the norm, not the exception. Although this is an industry problem, it is intensified at big firms like shearn. 8] if you are not retained or tried out, dont expect too many substantial work to come your way. Your jobscope would mainly be shared task, transcribing, indexing, translating and so on.
