Business travel without a destination

Pros

-Business travel is seeing a lot of tech investment and it's an exciting time to work in the industry. -The idea behind the product is amazing and it attracts some amazing people to work on it. Co-workers are awesome. -Employees are given autonomy within their own projects. -Events are fun and well coordinated. -All hands are engaging. -Management collects a lot of feedback.

Cons

-CEO creates a culture of unapproachability, scattered priorities, and weak long term product vision. Unfortunately it's hard to see this changing and is the foundational cause of Rocketrip's cultural problems. -Leadership expects butts in seats and prioritizes visibility over everything. You will probably excel in your career here if you wear neon colors. -Most decisions are sales ($) led resulting in ineffective long-term growth strategies (ie make a sale for $1 today when you're going to have to spend $2 to support it in the future) -Career growth is old fashioned/ corporate. You're expected to do the job you'd be promoted into while being told a promotion "might be possible" next review cycle. Make your sacrifice at the altar of the promotion gods and hope it was enough. -If you have new ideas that might be challenging to execute or critical of current strategy those ideas will be limited because the company is risk averse and wary of losing customers. -Leadership is always playing defense to the CEO rather than having open and honest conversations about the lack of direction in the business. This leads to micro-management and leadership wasting their time on low priority issues. -They're really trying to improve culture and fix a lot of this feedback but everything moves at a glacial pace. They've gotten the feedback above from every employee for months and in some cases years but rolling out any new change is painful. -Working at Rocketrip is like being stuck on a cruise ship. It's slow moving, you can't change direction, the captain makes the decisions, and after a week you're not having fun anymore.

As always, we appreciate your candor in providing feedback. We are happy to hear that you had a great experience with your co-workers and with the level of autonomy over your work. We certainly agree that we have very talented, awesome people at Rocketrip, and that our product and the vision behind it are amazing. It is also definitely part of the culture here to provide all employees with a strong voice; we hire great people and trust them to take initiative and drive the direction of their own work. Thank you for also recognizing the effort that goes into providing fun and engaging events and information sharing forums like our monthly company-wide All Hands Meetings! As you pointed out, we are very interested in gathering feedback to continuously improve the employee experience. To that end, we have been focused over the last months on ensuring that we have a clear and well-communicated product roadmap and vision. Open and honest communication from the top is emphasized with weekly company-wide updates from the CEO and all executives, several outlets for anonymous and direct questions and comments and open public discussion with the CEO and the leadership team (for example via our dedicated “ask the CEO anything” Slack channel, and at the monthly All Hands or Quarterly OKR meetings.) We also have a standing open door policy to discuss any concerns or ideas - even though we actually don’t have any doors...the Executives and the CEO all sit out on the open floor with everyone else ; ) New ideas are welcomed, explored and vetted for their feasibility against the roadmap, resources, client needs, etc. The challenge is in determining priorities, and unfortunately not all new ideas can be implemented at once. Just because something is not done, definitely doesn’t mean it wasn’t heard and carefully considered. In terms of decisions being sales-led… of course sales are extremely important! We wouldn’t have a company, nor the ability to invest further in the product without a very strong sales focus. However, this is balanced with constant evaluation of long-term product strategy, market needs, customer requests, innovative new ideas, etc. It may not always be broadly visible as you go about daily activities, but rest-assured, there is a continuous rigorous evaluation of the product and longer term strategy. When it comes to growth opportunities at Rocketrip, we actually have a high rate of internal promotions and mobility across and within departments; we are actively in the process of developing enhanced career paths and job ladders. We have also begun making career development planning and action plans a part of the bi-annual performance review process. It is, of course, the case that we expect demonstrated performance levels to warrant promotions; we also set out the expectations and steps required as well as providing the support and resources to achieve the next level. With regard to the concern you raise about “butt in seats”, I do want to clarify that we provide a lot of flexibility to employees and support several remote work arrangements. In fact, more than 20% of our company works remotely! It is true that we also have a strong office culture, and feel that it is important that those who are able to do so, work in the office as much as possible. We feel that this facilitates strong employee bonds and more effective communication and idea-sharing (and we just have more fun when we are together!) When it comes to “visibility”, we certainly encourage all employees to be actively involved and contributing at a high level! However, to be clear, this can and is done very effectively by our remote employees, as well! We are always trying to effect positive changes based on feedback, and we realize that sometimes changes take time if they are to be done right. We also hope to provide a broader and balanced perspective through our responses here. We aren’t perfect...no workplace is, but we care, and we always take what you have to say to heart and use it to further the positive evolution of the company and culture. Keep it coming! As always, feel free to connect with us directly to discuss further by contacting HR@Rocketrip.com.

A company with a great idea but horrific culture

Pros

Great talent, committed employees, great business idea.

Cons

Company is struggling to sign on new customers and establish strong product / market fit. This is creating a ton of anxiety and fear, causing leaders (CEO) to express bad, demotivating and unproductive behavior. As a result, ideas are being shot down, psychological security is being compromised, and people are being micromanaged.

Pros

Clean office space in a nice area of midtown. Benefits are great: take advantage of the CitiBike, gym memberships & health benefits. Birthday lunches make you feel special.

Cons

I thought I had a great experience until the massive layoff, people kept resigning & more layoffs. Management is unprofessional and amateur. They create a toxic work environment where you feel exhausted and drained because you no matter what you do here it isn't good enough. People focused is a lie. In order to succeed here you must suck up to management despite being a good worker. Your talents don't matter unless you play the game. You can tell "HR" that you have an issue and I guess unless it's something dramatic they will sweep it under the rug. Toxic. They chalk it up to not being "self efficient" as the reason why people have "struggled" here but it really is simply negligent management.

We appreciate you taking the time to give your feedback and we are sorry to hear about your experience following the restructuring at the end of 2018. The decisions made regarding staff changes (the changes impacted about 7 people in the fall of 2018, so would not categorize it as a massive lay off) were made after careful evaluation, and based upon objective performance criteria. Any time employees are let go, it is only after a thoughtful process, and typically after several remedial steps have been taken to try to improve the situation through coaching, feedback and support. As noted earlier, as we respect the privacy of individuals, so it is not often widely known what preliminary actions have been taken to try to remedy a performance or behavioral concern. To your point regarding managers, we are constantly investing in the development of our management team by implementing manager training and other programs to ensure they are equipped to coach and lead their teams as effectively as possible. We are happy that you enjoyed our benefits and perks, as we’ve worked hard to implement a robust benefits program to support employee growth, health and development. Additionally, we encourage all employees to make use of our unlimited PTO policy as it is important to allow everyone time to unplug and unwind. While we do not agree that our work environment is toxic, if you’re open to discussing your feedback in more detail, please reach out to me directly via HR@rocketrip.com. We’re focused on growth and it’s feedback like yours that helps us continue to do this.
