Pros

You can gain a lot of experience quickly because you will be needed for the job. In the US, the pay is comparable to other translation companies and the benefits are actually very good with a lot of vacation days from the beginning. This is a good starting point for someone wanting to gain experience in project management.

Cons

The company refuses to hire enough people to do the job and there is a high turnover. They are extremely focused on profits and probably prefer to hire someone new rather than pay the salary of an experienced person. If you aren't working constantly every second of the day, they will find something for you to do and probably put you on helping another team. There is usually no time for breaks and overtime is expected. Lots of experienced people have been lost due to limited job growth opportunities and poor work/life balance. Getting a promotion is a case of being in the right place at the right time and often ends up being the same role with added responsibilities for not much more pay. This causes the team to be made up almost entirely of new hires who cannot do the job and the few experienced members are left to pick up the slack. They will move you to a different team without any regard of training or understanding of the new job role you have been put into. They only care about the profits of that team. The job roles are not well defined and the project management model has not been well executed. Mostly, people are just scrambling to get the work done by any means possible with little support. The IT side of the job is extremely inefficient, usually leading to using several tools in order to track a project and get the work done. Updating one entry means that several others must also be updated manually. It is an admin nightmare and things are constantly being forgotten. The admin takes up more time than getting the job done in most cases. They hold a lot of meetings regarding how to handle stress, but the stress is caused by RWS themselves. If they really cared about their employees, they would make sure the team is well balanced and supported before experienced people quit for preventable reasons. There are a lot of secrets and gossiping going on behind closed doors. It's hard to tell anyone's true intentions or to trust them. Bringing up true emotions can cause unwanted and unnecessary drama, so it's usually best that you stay quiet. The yearly bonus is very small and should not be considered when applying. The greed of the company doesn't allow it to give back to its employees that put their sweat and blood into earning this money.

Case study in bad leadership, bad M&A

Pros

There are high performing teams throughout the organization made up of dedicated, experienced, passionate people.

Cons

Lacks an articulable vision, lacks servant leadership, lacks culture. Lacks diversity in executive positions despite being the biggest player in an industry powered by diversity - this is, frankly, inexcusable. Acquisition of SDL has been poorly planned, executed and communicated; integration complexities have been left to employees to identify and solve, as if risk assessments were never done. Comp plans have been unreasonably delayed. All signs point to an organization that is not culturally or strategically positioned to lead this industry, and whose leaders don’t seem to think this is a problem.

Pros

The people (at ground level) are great You learn a lot

Cons

Overtime is the norm, and unpaid for those who are UK based. Workloads are not realistic, and when people leave they are not replaced The company has been promising for 5+ years to put a Job Framework including salaries together, and this still hasn't been published. Pay disparities are very common, and management tries to forbid people from talking to each other about salaries. The company recently announced YET ANOTHER pay review postponement. The technology is incredibly poor and inefficient, and then management complains about not hitting targets. The CEO doesn't have a translation background and after 2 years, I still don't think he understands the company. I used to be proud to say I was working at SDL/RWS, but that feeling has long gone.
