One of the worst tech companies in NYC

Pros

Many nice people within the company Some opportunity for mobility in Estonia. Good stepping stone to other tech jobs. Nice perks and workplace design in Estonia.

Cons

Take the positive reviews here with a grain of salt. Most reviews here (if not all) were left upon request from HR and during better times. I mean who really goes out of their way to leave positive reviews? There are few inspiring leaders within the company. There are now two CEOs because the former CEO left neither of which can fill the original CEO's shoes. There is nepotism at the highest ranks of the company, allowing a serial underperformer to main a key leadership position. The person is an incredibly bad manager and fosters toxic culture leading to poor business results. There are large pockets of toxic and depressed culture, most notably the marketing department. There was lots of high-profile executive turnover in 2016. On the U.S. side of operation, employee perks are not that good compared to other growing companies in New York. It's disenchanting to hear the U.S based CEO complain about the cost stocking the kitchen or group outings. Most opportunity for mobility is in Estonia. Very few promotions happen on the U.S. side of business. There is no formal talent development program.

Every quarter we ask our employees: “would you recommend working at Pipedrive to a friend?” as one of the ways to measure how we’re doing as a company. The results is our Employee NPS (Net Promoter Score). Our current score is 64 which is a high score by any standard, and our goal is to grow it past the 80 mark over time. We take Employee NPS feedback and reviews like this seriously and aim to become a better place to work at every year, quarter and day. Our most important asset is not our brand, interior design or product, but people, after all. We’re sorry that the author of this review feels this way about Pipedrive. We’re growing fast, and in the process sometimes make mistakes. We’re aware of some of the issues referred here and we’re working on fixing them. We don’t quite agree on the author’s assessment of our leadership, employee perks and lack of talent development programs, however. Employees that have given us the high NPS score or written positive reviews here would probably agree.

Questionable Ethics

Pros

A good product and some really great team members

Cons

Founders recently parted ways with the CEO due to not wanting to invest in sales & marketing. They have also shown little to no interest in investing in the US team. Recently they displayed very questionable morals and ethics when they let multiple people go days/hours before their stock would have vested. I would stay away from any new roles where they are asking you to build out a new function for them. Risk would be they will let you go once you do the work and they feel they can maintain it on their own.

We’re proud of our low employee turnover rate, but like any business, we do part ways with team members every now and then. During our six years of operation, twice a contract termination has occurred relatively close to the “cliff date” of first options vesting, and in both cases, timing was coincidental and not the driving factor. There are two sides to every story. We’d like to strengthen ours by adding that more than 140 employees (out of our 220-strong team as of today) have successfully passed their “cliff date.” With the anniversary of our move to New York in August, several of our U.S. team members already have some options vested, and this number is steadily growing. People are our most important asset. People who want to make a difference and take an active role in a global growth story. If you are one of those people, please read other comments here as well.

Pros

The engineering work is supported by high-quality hardware and tools with Macbook Pro as default. The office environment is outstanding, with excellent coffee and other amenities e.g. gym. In Tallinn, there's a slight compensation for food, though the effects of cost-cutting are noticeable. Specialists and middle managers, especially those with extensive experience, are highly competent. The benefits package and private health insurance are particularly impressive. Below the mid-manager level, traces of Pipedrive's exceptional culture still persist. The atmosphere is friendly, making the workplace feel safe and welcoming. However, challenges emerge at higher management levels, notably with executives brought in by Vista. Most executives within the Engineering organization hail from the "old Pipedrive" period and are effective, but the broader business organization displays a wide range of personalities. There's a noticeable distinction between individuals who merely manage upwards and those who are truly committed and put in significant effort for the company, rather than just completing tasks and seeking approval from senior management. The method of addressing problems—whether by a thorough, fact-considerate approach or a hasty, imbalanced reaction—significantly separates the original Pipedrivers from the newcomers.

Cons

Last summer, the CTO announced that there is no future at the company for experienced engineers, intending to force out senior staff due to their high salaries. The company is slashing costs by laying off senior engineers and specialists, not fully complying with legal standards. This practice of not offering alternative roles within the company breaches Estonian law. HR has shifted its focus entirely to cost-cutting, neglecting fairness and career progression. Over a few years, HR quality has plummeted from the highest standards to the lowest, as previous leaders have left. The company is gearing up for a sale by Vista, yet it's not achieving enough growth for a satisfactory valuation, hampered by poor investment in its product and overspending on ineffective marketing. Pipedrive's culture is diminishing, evident from the repeated small-scale layoffs—occurring three times in 2024 alone—rather than a singular comprehensive cut, setting a tone of bleak expectations. The environment, once vibrant and joyful, has been overshadowed by an atmosphere of fear, distrust, and empty promises. The upper management, located in London, feels out of touch, making rare appearances only for superficial motivational speeches. Whereas senior contributors initially received stock options with Vista's acquisition, this benefit is now reserved for senior executives alone. In contrast, companies like Bolt and Wise continue to distribute stock options. Feedback from employees is mostly ignored, met with a facade of polite disinterest. Teams within the customer organization have been dismissed for asking too many questions about their career paths. In the engineering and product divisions, there's a clear absence of a coherent long-term plan for developing a superior product—a feeling that was strong a few years ago. Currently, the focus seems to be on maintaining existing systems, with significant resources misspent on non-productive marketing activities. Engineers share this sentiment, with many appearing to be disengaging quietly and starting to look for new job opportunities elsewhere.
