grand visions but wasted alot of resources on random projects

great silicon valley benefits very smart people free food

Cons

some of the really smart people are more interested in random interesting projects without any business application. Some of the projects could have been done faster but the PhDs chose to do very sophisticated solution just because it is interesting.

Pros

The people are extremely smart and the most pleasant that I've ever worked with. The business model is very straightforward and ostensibly lucrative. Lots of interesting problems to address and technologies to play with for new features.

Cons

In no hurry to set up career growth tracks for software engineers. Flailed around with one-off POCs that did not generate repeatable revenue for way too long. Cut an awful lot of corners to get lots of features in production and tech debt is rather large and long-term support requirements for old software is greatly hindering innovation. Difficult process to adopt new technologies that are not focused around new features (e.g. better logging, monitoring, etc...).

Pros

The terrible space puns are just irrestible, but Orbital is out of this world. When interviewing at Orbital, I felt like I had never been surrounded by so much raw talent in my life. Orbital is perfectly positioned at the confluence of dramatically cheapening geospatial information, dramatically improving computer vision technology, and dramatically increasing interest in geo-analysis at all levels of the enterprise. As the title says, get on the rocket ship. It's taking off!

Cons

Orbital is growing so quickly that process can fall by the wayside. Building this discipline early can circumvent problems later on.
