Pros

The work is rewarding and interesting , and at times can be fun - events and programs for international students. With such a small staff, there are opportunities to work on different projects and gain experience. The mission of the organization is great. Staff are supportive and collaborative of each other. All ideas are heard. Great opportunity to learn and contribute to various aspects that support the organization's mission.

Cons

The work load is heavy and the pay is low. This is expected of a non-profit but there are very few other ways that the organization makes up for it such as through their vacation policies, flexible work hours/work from home, etc. Instead, upper management is strict on staff even when it does not make logistical sense (such as during slower periods), and even if this strictness actually makes it more difficult to accomplish tasks. For the most part, staff are very competent in their roles and have an innate drive to support the mission and ensure success, yet opportunities to reward staff are missed. As a result, many staff have felt that they are not valued or trusted and the organization suffers from a high turnover that could be remedied if management focuses more on employee satisfaction and retention.

Pros

Participants going through the programs have a good experience. However, having a "good" experience does not equal having a unique experience. While this programming might have been unique over 40 years ago, it needs a team that is forward thinking and innovative to take the organization and its programming to the next level. And while participants have a great experience and see the best side of the staff, the organizational culture borders on toxic (primarily around the way staff treat and speak to each other).

Cons

The organization lacks a clear set of values, has no strategic plan for the future - nor has it ever really had one in its 40+ years of operation, does not invest in its staff (you can watch their website to view their quick staff turnover), has little to no institutional support - which speaks to their inability to clearly articulate what they do and the impact of their work, and lacks strong community partnerships. While the organization talks about how diversity is essential to their office culture and work - they are inexperienced in how to approach topics of race, multiculturalism, and conflict. Most of the staff have little to no other work experience so with regard to diversity of thought, design thinking, and creative approaches to work/programming you will hit a wall of frustration around every corner.

Pros

The mission is valuable - to promote international education and cultural understanding for international students.

Cons

Terrible work conditions. Some Directors have too much to do while others don't seem to have any responsibility. Management does not trust employees.
