Poor pay, too much admin work

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

Helpful staff in tech issues and admin for admin work that tutors should not be doing.

Cons

For £15 per hour tutors have to secure at least 3 hours a week (20,40 min sessions) by chasing parents and setting up the sessions, which for each student adds on 30 - 60 mins to the work. Then there is the issue of admin attached to each student, attendance reports etc. Extremely poor pay for professionalism of a tutor.

Pros

The company are very responsive and supportive. There are weekly tutor support sessions, they give you a personalised report of your lessons every month with helpful feedback and they help with contacting unresponsive parents.

Cons

The pay sometimes falls a bit short compared to the effort one has to put in for their students, including admin (personalised student reports after every lesson, marking attendance, calling/emailing parents to book/re-arrange sessions), marking, lesson prep, creating personalised resources, etc. They do have some extra learning materials to help but to effectively personalise lessons for each student, a lot of extra work is required. Parents can either choose a 20, 40 or 60-minute timeslot for their child's weekly sessions. They frequently choose 40-minute time slots. There have also been some issues with receiving payment on time.

Poor pay and work policies

Pros

- Kind staff - Consistent work

Cons

- £9.33 (£10.68 for A-level) for a 40 minute lesson (most common length, as lessons are booked in 20m slots) - If a student cancels last minute - less than 24h notice - tutors do not get paid, however the company does get paid by the client - You are expected to complete hours-long training for free, which mostly covers the company's business model and how to use their online systems. - You are expected to complete extensive administrative tasks for free: establish relationship with clients, book and reschedule lessons, log phone call and email communication with clients in a virtual calendar, explain to clients how the business model works when doubts rise, log hours at the end of each week etc.
