Pros

Relaxing environment Expectation of employees are low Friendly staff

Cons

Management have no clue what they're doing - their "directors" have a long fancy title that means nothing Employees have no voice Not diverse at all, probably less than 10% ethnic minorities in the company - shocking because London and their clients are so diverse! Only one female developer, majority of women work in admin or test Only one female in upper management HPD have an old way of working and stuck into their ways Their softwares not any good and very 1990s I think most people are demotivated, if you walk through the office the majority are browsing the web for most of the day Never get pay rises, not on merit anyway. Pay is low (matches to the level of work) Boring, so boring infact it will stunt any career growth you had Male dominated (if I haven't eluded to that already)

Thank you for taking the time to complete your review of HPD. You will be pleased to hear that since you left the company and we have made tremendous progress in the points that you raised. - By reviewing our recruitment process, we are now ensuring that our workforce is becoming more and more diverse. And it has so far really paid off with some excellent new people joining the team. - We have been addressing our former parity issue and now 40% of our staff at management level are female. It is still quite difficult to ensure parity at all levels of the organisation due to the nature of our business, but we are generally making progress in that specific direction and we will continue to think of new ways to ensure everyone has a chance to join HPD and progress their career. - There is more than one channel used by our employees to be heard: Our employee forum, with employee representatives selected by the staff, has been very effective to address some general concerns within the company. Additionally, their line manager and our HR Manager is more than happy to listen and address individual employees’ queries. - As we are currently growing, we want to ensure that our current employees and future employees will (continue) to be happy to work with us. Therefore, you will be glad to know that we are looking at new ways of working and ensuring that our benefit and reward package stay competitive. - We are doing some exciting developments with our product suite , in particular around UI and UX. We are increasing our customer base monthly and the HPD team are producing some really fantastic software.

Micromanagement at its worst

Pros

Most of the employees are genuinely lovely people. And the salary was good by comparison to industry average.

Cons

Some of the worst management I've ever come across. I speak for my direct team only, but I experienced distrust and micromanagement from the beginning. I couldn't work from home without receiving numerous phone calls from my boss checking that I was actually working, and I was genuinely really nervous the time I had to phone my boss because I was ill. This was in contrast to other teams, where people frequently worked from home once a week, or to fit around their personal lives. It was drilled into our team by the manager that we had to follow different rules to everyone else in order to appear the most 'professional'. I would often receive texts and emails at absurd times of night, e.g. texts at 11pm on a Friday night asking me to do something work-related (bear in mind my job was by no means senior enough to demand this). It was the kind of place where those who worked the longest hours were considered the most productive, which is unsurprisingly far from the truth. Complete lack of flexibility - think contractual working hours which are overriden by 'unwritten' working hours, amounting to more work but no more pay. The kind of place where you feel uncomfortable leaving on time, let alone asking to leave early to attend a doctors appointment. There was no system for booking holiday and managers would reject requests for holiday without giving a reason. It's generally an Old Boys club - if you're young or female (or worse, both) your voice will not be heard. Change, in my experience, was incredibly rare if not non-existent. The vast majority of employees have been at the company for 10+ years and don't care for more recent, younger employees' opinions. Complaints were regularly thrown about in management meetings (from what I heard) but were never acted upon or properly addressed. It's the most old-fashioned company I've worked for. For a software company, the software was was outdated and no one had bothered to upgrade it. And just a lack of motivation in the office was a massive deterrent, probably caused in part by conflict between teams which was never resolved. Turnover in my team was also very high - three people left within three months this year.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us your feedback. We are committed to provide a flexible, enriching and nurturing environment to all our employees, and I am sorry to hear that part of your experience at HPD Software did not match those promises. We are taking your feedback on board and ensure that will continue to ensure that our culture and values are fully embraced by everyone in the organisation. We have grown quickly as an organisation over recent years and we are working hard to upgrade our internal systems so that they reflect our new ways of working and future growth ambitions. We acknowledge that this is important and it must be delivered. I would like to reassure you that flexibility and trust are fundamental principles at HPD: we are all very flexible in the way we work, putting extra hours at time to ensure a project is delivered in due course, and in return, our employees are not tight by specific time to arrive or leave the office (many of us enjoy a long break to go the gym over lunch!) and working from home is a general accepted practice throughout the organisation. We are indeed unique in our demographic for a tech company: We are proud to employ a wider range of workers, from newly graduates or apprentices to employees who has been working with us for years, who are now towards the end of their career. We are always on the lookout for fresh talents, as we know that this exchange of experiences, background and knowledge is key to contribute to HPD’s bright future. Once again, thank you very much for your feedback and I wish you the best in your next adventure.

Pros

HPD is a friendly and warm place to work, across all levels of the organisation. Training and learning & development is encouraged, even from the outset of employment There are regular engaging and informative company meetings CEO is open and approachable, as are other senior management Great social side to the organisation too

Cons

Things can take a lot longer than necessary to get done, which at times can be frustrating. Focus needs to be on the right areas, especially some systems and ways of working which are out-dated. There are certainly challenges in how hard it can be to continue growth; from a commercial, cultural, technology and customer focus perspective, and this is at times apparent at HPD. The company would certainly benefit from having more experienced, diverse professionals join the middle management and senior management layers who have a fresh perspective on how opportunities could be better approached. Investment in building strong teams in the right areas of the business is key to allowing HPD to fulfil its ambitions. Having said this, there has been a lot of work over the last 18 months or so to set a fresh strategic direction and a better, more collaborative working environment, and these changes are evident every day. It will still take some time, but HPD is on a clear path to embedding a strong and positive working culture to support its growth strategy.

Thank you for the feedback. We are working on improving internal systems and processes as we grow the business. It is never as fast as I would like, but we will get there.
