Pros

Top Management is quite friendly and understanding. A very focused organization with a vision to be the largest insurance company in Nigeria in terms of premium generation and profit. The objective is more of a long time, to preserve the company's wealth and the Leadway brand. Owners are very passionate about the business and not really interested in living a flamboyant lifestyle, unlike most business owners in Nigeria. Overly discounted staff bus that goes to almost every part of Lagos State and the border town of Ogun state up till Redemption Camp. I think staff pays just 5k monthly to subscribe to the bus service. There is also free lunch for Interns and serving NYSC members. In general, it is a great place to work and learn. Staff welfare is generally above average so make sure you negotiate very well before accepting an offer. Promotion is done annually but that doesn't mean everyone will be promoted. Some level of subjectivity still plays underground during performance evaluation but I think management is really trying to address this. During my short stay, I have heard of cases where a line manager reviewed a subordinate poorly so as not to be promoted; but such a review got turned back during the performance committee review meeting, and the subordinate was promoted.

Cons

Has some form of legacy culture as there are lots of experienced and elderly staff within the organization. You need to lean and get comfortable with addressing your senior colleagues with Mr. and Mrs. This was quite tough for me initially as I have always been used to addressing colleagues even CEOs by their first name only or initials. Respect is emphasized a lot, so one needs to be perceived as being respectful every time. That said, one needs to however challenge the norms once in a while if one really wants to grow. Just balance both and you will be fine. A few line managers lack empathy and other leadership quality. I wouldn't want to mention their name or position on a public forum.
