Pros

LaunchCode provides free education in 4 (soon to be 6) markets. Currently hosting free computer science classes at University of Rhode Island, Miami Dade College, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and multiple locations in St. Louis. LaunchCode has set up apprenticeships for 450+ people in multiple states at companies like Boeing, MasterCard and Riot Games. This work does not just happen without a dedicated workforce of people committed to solving the tech talent gap in this country. LaunchCode staff is exactly this. I like my coworkers, the mission and helping people better their lives through education and job opportunities they may not have otherwise had. I can't think of a more flexible work environment with a group of smart people trying to make the world a better place.

Cons

LaunchCode is a very ambitions nonprofit and not everything is mapped out perfectly. This environment doesn't work well for some-- best to know in advance if you are the kind of person who can see a light through the fog or needs a map for every step you take.

Pros

Being a full-time employee that works for LaunchCode on building the classes that students take has been very rewarding. Having a job that has a clearly positive impact on my community is quite different that simply having a normal programming job. I feel empowered by management. The vibe in the office is positive and focused on helping people take free classes and hopefully get their first job in tech. PTO and medical benefits are good.

Cons

If you work for LaunchCode as a full-time employee, the pay is not market level if you have programming experience. This is not apply to the apprentice program for students.

Thanks for your review! As a non-profit, the salaries we're able to offer our full-time employees will differ from what they may be able to earn in a similar corporate role. We still strive for internal and gender-based equity across all roles. Carmen Ye Director of People Operations hr@launchcode.org

Pros

-Kind, smart, funny, creative, and all-around amazing coworkers -Supportive boss and team -Impactful mission of changing lives and providing free education + job placement to people who need it most -Genuine commitment among staff to learning more about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and educating themselves on privilege and whiteness -Flexible working hours

Cons

-LaunchCode did a lot of work on salary equity. There remains more work to be done, as there is at most organizations, especially in balancing salary of junior staff with that of more senior employees. -Not necessarily a con, but something LC is always working on is how to be successful in markets outside St Louis. This has been a long-term challenge, and can create confusion and uncertainty for staff.
