Pros

Many of the people there are lovely and very good at their jobs (unfortunately, given the treatment).

Cons

Pay is embarrassing - Breaks down to just above minimum wage which is laughable when weighed up against the importance of the work and intensity at times. Staff incentives are a joke - Their ‘access to discounts from hundreds of retailers’ are nothing that you can’t get from quickly googling discount codes. Car benefit scheme claimed to have something for everyone but when I entered my salary, there was nothing available for any length of lease. No hope of a bonus or anything and our Christmas ‘treat’ was a pudding worth about a fiver at most. Worked all the way through COVID, going to the office/lab full-time, being flexible with hours, and our thanks went as far as a ‘thank you’ video from upper management who had the privilege of working from home. Treatment of staff is absolutely dreadful - Witnessed many people reduced to tears by the same people in senior positions. This, along with lots of other reasons, has been mentioned to upper management and HR on many occasions and in many exit interviews over the course of years and nothing has changed. HR department is a shambles - Only interested in protecting the interests of the company, rather than being a form of support for employees. As mentioned above, nothing has changed despite multiple complaints around the same issues. Honestly got no real idea what they actually do. Even aware of instances where people have gone to them in confidence with issues and these have been reported back to the manager in question, which is completely unacceptable. Business model is predatory - They rely so heavily on people thinking forensics is glamorous and wanting to get into the industry which is why most of the work force is so young. Every time someone leaves they have an advert out the same day and are even starting to bring on apprentices now, which they’ll love given how little they’ll be able to get away with paying them. False glassdoor reviews - There is only one positive review up for KFS which anyone in their right mind can see has been written by senior management. It is the polar opposite to every single other review and when discussing it with colleagues everyone found it hilarious how blatant that was. It’s also worth noting that 2 further negative reviews have been deleted for some reason but were once again both accurate representations of how awful this place is. You can tell that people agree with these statements from how many users mark them as ‘helpful’. Could go on with multiple others cons but in summary this place should be avoided at all costs if you value your mental health and want to live comfortably.

Pros

Most of the people are friendly and great fun to work with. Head of department is very approachable and always makes time for people, brings a very positive energy to the department which is refreshing. The work itself can often be rewarding. It is a foot in the door if you are interested in the field.

Cons

Salary is not competitive at all - you can easily find very similar roles at other companies for more money. Other companies will most likely treat you better too. Management do not treat people in the lab very well - they can be unsupportive, condescending, and often just downright rude, which doesn't create a very pleasant atmosphere to work in. They claim to always be there if we need to speak to them about something, yet are unapproachable. You feel that you can't speak up for fear of painting a target on your back. We are constantly told that we aren't to work as a team to get work completed and, on multiple occasions, people have been reprimanded for having emotions and branded as unprofessional or immature. There have been several instances of staff members being reduced to tears by the callousness of management. There are also definite cases of favouritism, which is unacceptable. We are always told that there is training on the horizon and that there is room for progression. But this is never the case. You will be waiting and waiting and waiting for training which will rarely ever come. And since training is so delayed, any chance of progression is most definitely in the far distant future. You will instead be left doing a thankless job day in, day out; never receiving recognition and only being given feedback by management when something has gone wrong. This constant negativity wreaks havoc with the mental health of employees, despite the image that the company portrays on social media as championing the mental health of their staff. The targets and volume of work set is far too high and, despite us flagging this multiple times, we are made to feel that we simply do not work hard enough. They do little to understand the reality of the work that we have to do and instead choose to tell us that we are too slow or even that we spend too much talking. This is a real slap in the face as these same people can often be found sat around chatting while we in the lab are stressed about completing work on time, often barely getting the time to take adequate lunch breaks let alone sit around chatting. The stress of the work is exacerbated by the insistence that the very small team work as two separate shifts. HR are aware of many of the issues that make this an unpleasant place to work for most people, either through exit interviews or the focus groups that are held to 'improve things', but nothing is ever done to improve things. Things are either brushed over or ignored completely.

Pros

- I loved what I did, very proud of my work. - Some wonderful people work here and do an incredible job. - Very experience staff available to help new staff coming in. - Good stepping stone if you don’t mind low pay for experience. - Everyday was different.

Cons

- Poor pay for stress and workload. - Managers openly had favourites which meant that if new roles came out you had no chance of progression. - Rude lab supervisors who were unapproachable and had a ‘we are more important’ complex. Also openly (attempted whispering) made inappropriate comments about scientists, including homophobia and staff mental health issues. - High stress environment with lack of recognition. - A HR department that lacks ‘human’, the treatment of staff after terrible life events that effected their work was horrendous. - Managers on salaries higher than new staff could ever reach in their positions would preach about how the job is not about the money and you shouldn’t work here if you want money.
