Toxic Management Culture

Pros

The company is big on growth and change so you get to be involved with some interesting work. You occasionally get to travel too.

Cons

Kathmandu paints itself as a fun, outdoorsy kind of company but it couldn't be further from the truth. The culture is completely corporate and the atmosphere in the head office is unpleasant. The pay is poor and you get treated pretty badly. Some examples from my experience: - You get told that the company can't afford to give anybody an annual pay rise (for the second year in a row) but then you see the published salaries of the executive team and see that they have gone up over 20% (again) - You are put under intense pressure and made to work long hours and weekends while your manager strolls in after 9, spends most of the day on the internet, takes a 2 hour lunch break, then leaves at 5. - You work until after 10pm so you arrive at 8.45am the next morning. Somebody from HR is waiting at the door to tell you off because you should be there at 8.30am. You explain that you were there until late the night before and they tell you it doesn't matter and that you'll get a formal warning if it happens again. - You witness a manager bullying one of their subordinates. You and several others report it to HR and nothing happens. I could go on but I'm sure you get the gist. There are some great people that work there it's just a shame that the executive team can't (or won't) foster a better culture.

Pros

- Good staff discounts on gear

Cons

- Very little opportunities for career progression, I never had an IDP during my entire time there even when I asked for one multiple time. - Annual raises are insultingly low. There are also no bonuses or performance-related renumeration, so the incentive to do a good job is very low. - Constant pressure from upper management to work overtime and on weekends without compensation. Time in lieu was promised but never given. - HR pat themselves on the back for 'best workplace' awards meanwhile many staff have breakdowns once they get home after work. - Pay bands for my position were significantly below market rate. When I raised this with my manager they said that HR would review this and I never heard back from them. - Staff turnover is very high, and they're struggling to hire replacements which means that existing staff are being overworked and getting burned out. HR appear uninterested to put in the effort to retain staff. - No perks aside from the staff discount. - No education opportunities for office staff outside of courses teaching you about Excel. - The project managers in other departments are frustrating to work with, never being able to give a firm answer or constantly changing their minds. - Poor communication from upper management regarding job security. Multiple restructures occurred during my time and they always led to an increase in workload, no pay changes and decreased staff morale. - HR is very unapproachable and don't take criticism well, leading to a lack of willingness amongst staff to report issues. - Support to WFH is very minimal, with staff expected to provide everything for themselves. Even then they still only allow you to WFH if you absolutely can't come into the office, despite the policy being hybrid. - Very minimal social opportunities, with industry event attendence discouraged unless you're a member of the executive team. - Upper management is very quick to play the blame game if something goes wrong, but never offers positive feedback when things are going right. I always felt underappreciated/undervalued at work.

Pros

Quality products that you can be proud of being a part of. The company is successful. Generous staff discount, however it isn't amazing. If you're a multi sport athlete you'll feel welcomed and at home.

Cons

The company slogan used to be "Live the Dream" but that is not a reflection of the way that staff are treated. Due to the lacking remuneration levels in the head office and the top-down negativity from all rungs of the ladder, it is anything but for staff who don't fit the "sporty outdoors people" mould that the company so highly covets. There are no performance incentives for any staff whom are not management, or directly tied to sales.
