Wrong Mindset at Play

Pros

1) A large training budget exists (or did exist) for employees. I do not know of any other company in Turkey that would send its employees overseas for training. 2) Office has a nice design and snacks/drinks are available. 3) Overtime is not "officially" expected from employees (CEO unofficially requested form employees not to target 45 hours, which is set by the law, and work more than that however there is no enforcement on that notice). 4) There are many smart and kind individuals inside the company. 5) Salaries are somewhat good, they were great however with the imminent growth of the company, salary increases have dwindled. 6) Employees are from all over the world and diversity is perfect.

Cons

1) Bad management, surrounded by "yes-people", lacks any kind of social skills. CEO has a bit of a childish personality. It's either his way or the highway, there is no ground between those. He convinced himself that he knows everything better than his employees. The very second that you start to explain anything technical, he (probably) assumes that you are trying to trick him and just outright dismisses your explanations. Most of the time, he has this "sassy" attitude which seems like he would rather choose to be right over doing the right thing. 2) Technology is archaic and not open for changes, don't expect to work with cutting-edge stuff. There is no effort for refactoring/maintaining the old codebase. New features keep piling up while the rest of the system stands on toothpicks. 3) The company forces you to install an unethical tracking software called Timedoctor, which allows the management to look over your shoulder constantly. It does not matter if you put a great effort or not, just move your mouse and press some buttons for 8 hours a day and you are peachy. This decision allows employees to do the minimum work and spread what they have on their hands throughout the day since finishing your tasks early would mean that "you have worked less than the others" according to their mindset. 4) Roles are not defined properly, CTO works as if he is the lifebuoy of the company and he looks like he is getting older/more depressed day by day. Team leads exist but a shady tracking software is preferred instead of their feedback. 5) Code quality standards are lacking, there are no clear rules about what to use and what not to use. Even if there are rules, developers are not abiding by those. 6) Your salary increase highly depends on your image on the CEO's mind. If you are one of his "favourites", you get 40%. If he has a personal beef with you, you could get 0%.

Unfortunate decline

Pros

Profitable and growing company (the biggest opportunities are in sales.) Well regarded in their industry. 401k match and full medical coverage (minus family leave support or any meaningful wellness benefits)

Cons

Performance reviews are conducted privately within management, and any feedback/growth opportunities are never proactively discussed with the employee. Raises (only available in January, with no bonus structure) will always come as a surprise, and it's unclear how they are calculated. They are non-negotiable, and your own reflection of your accomplishments over the past year are not taken into account. Career growth is minimal and internal support is severely lacking. Management is top-down from the headquarters in Turkey, and is extremely male-dominated. The US team doesn't have much real say in their direction, focuses, or goals, and these can change on a dime with very little explanation or reasoning. Mandatory return to office 5 days a week, with no flexibility. If you have a doctor's appointment in the morning, you are still expected to swipe your badge into the office in the afternoon. Same if you have an early morning meeting with a team in Turkey (take it at home, then head to the office.) If your kid is sick, you are expected to take a sick day, and you cannot work remotely. (Ironically, the only employee who has been given any leeway here is the US recruiter.) PTO is lacking: 2 weeks for the first 2 years, then 3 weeks for the next 3 years.

Pros

- Hack weeks teach you a lot and you get to work with the latest technologies developing web applications for real life use cases. If you don't know what hack weeks are, they are like week long hackathons where each team in the company work on their own project and present them on friday. They can be a bit stressful though. - Smart, reliable, and out of the box thinking teammates/colleagues to work with. - Very high 5 digit salaries - FFA food/snacks/drinks

Cons

- The organizational structure is okay on paper but there is too much micromanagement. Expect CEO to mess with your work in a rude way frequently. Expect getting scolded by the CEO for something you worked on closely with the product manager. What is the purpose of a product manager if there is too much micromanagement from CEO? - Poorly managed, rushed and launched projects and yet the developers are to be blamed for failures. - No testing. No development branches. Non-existent SDLC. Code and Fix approach is mistaken for "Continous Integration". Not to mention how CEO brags about how we do "Continous Integration" in his Medium posts. - CEO has serious trust issues with the teams. He explicitly mentioned that people have not been doing their jobs properly and they would have to do their tasks properly if he was to see their progress each week since they knew he would be seeing their work. Do most of the people in the office lack work ethics? I honestly don't think so. - The worst part is, there are absolutely no intentions to bring resolutions to the problems I mentioned above. For example, CEO knows about urgency and amount of the bugs reported from users but still tells the teams to not to write tests...
