Pros

good books, except for the bizarre alt-right stuff we publish

Cons

Where to begin. They protect people who discriminate, despite all the diversity lip service. There was a time when all the leadership was men, but they are trying to fix that, usually not by promoting from within but by hiring 20somethings at a fraction of the cost. It's like someone told them, hey, women and minorities are just as good but cheaper! I've seen senior people leave to be replaced with entry-level staff, no doubt to save a buck. Forget about being promoted. I've seen people be promoted without a pay raise, seemingly at random, creating an environment of backstabbing and gossip, while the directors seem to enjoy this palace intrigue and encourage it. A person's work ethic doesn't matter either- people responsible for NYT bestsellers or award winners at best are ignored or at worst unceremoniously forced out.

Little, Brown department at Hachette is unnecessarily exhausting

Pros

Get to work on great projects, but have to fight more senior coworkers for them. If you don't fight for them, you'll get nothing. Some people in other departments are friendly. The office is bright and mostly clean. Free books.

Cons

Lots of cliques. People gossip nastily about you and others on a daily basis when you're not present. People are unfriendly just because they can be. Senior members lord their power over you instead of being professional. Senior members will give you their own workload so they can go to lunch longer or go home early. High level bosses are never around. Coworkers routinely talk about being unhappy and ready to 'escape'. Multiple years of losing money means we get small bonuses and raises. Open floor plan is loud and exhausting. Lazy people who complain about working hard the loudest seem to get rewarded. All the nice and hardworking coworkers leave quickly.

Closed Minded Leaders with Zero Creativity

Pros

The house still attracts great authors and illustrators.... for now. The adult imprints continue to impress me.

Cons

The three people in charge of LBYR are uninspired, micro-managers. They take credit for everything the staff below them does -- especially in public announcements - to a shameless extent. They overwork the staff and show little regard for innovative ideas. There is no strategy behind the organization of the list. The marketing department is continuously watered down and overhauled because management won't stop meddling in it. Editors aren't allowed to have private correspondence with agents - and they are leaving at an alarming rate. The reprint department is in absolute shambles. The meetings in general are uptight and unpleasant. Only two opinions matter... ever.
