Pros

Half day Friday’s, mostly friendly staff, books, and I guess that’s it.

Cons

If you are’t above a senior title you are invisible to upper management. Meaning you can be in the kitchen making a coffee and people higher up can’t even be bothered to speak to someone beneath them.

Has become a bad place to work. Great coworkers, bad management.

Pros

Good location in NY and Boston. Flexible on working from home during bad weather, etc. They seem to take care of our health by arranging some activities and sending us e-advices.

Cons

The entire upper management has changed for the worst. Some people that are hired lack people skills and that makes good employees leave. Pathetic health insurance. Public transportation / parking benefits are covered only partially (pretax money). They don't listen to the employees and just promote the people they need, so the good employees are gone. Entire IT department was gone, and each one of them was just incredible, but they wouldn't get what they needed to exist with life/work balance, things became a nightmare for all. Micro-management from certain newly hired people at the top made others leave. Shame.

Pros

um.....good location for commuters as well as lunch and after-work meet up spots. Training is EXTENSIVE, which is actually a good thing because they don't just drop you into your position and then expect you to know how to do everything. Also really good vacation time. But to be honest I really had to rack my brain to come up with those pros

Cons

People are clique-y and snarky, talking behind everyone's backs. Not a welcoming environment socially. Upper management doesn't care about people in lower level positions at all, pay is horrendous, and there are no day-to-day perks like catered lunches or free snacks. They dress up very simple positions where you really just punch numbers into a program and make it sound like it's more than it is. So boring, I have never been so bored. I was also micro-managed like I've never experienced- any tiny little thing is jumped on and talked about. There is really no promoting to be done for someone who starts out on a lower level. The higher ups are baby boomer age people who have been working at the company for 20 years and aren't going anywhere. no promotion = no pay raise. It's not like it's a fiery HELL, but there are so many better places to work out there, with much fairer compensation and a much kinder and more generous approach with their team.

Pros

Free books, great colleagues, learn a lot, great benefits. Your experience really depends on your department and the people in it.

Cons

Lots of pressure from upper management, most days are stressful for no real reason, too many meetings, low pay

Pros

Lots of smart, hardworking people. The benefits are great.

Cons

However, pay is low and annual increases are insignificant. Most recently, there have been changes to upper management that has made everyone feel overworked, underpaid and expendable. I miss the old HBG. I'm truly worry about the future. Spirits are down around and everyone is nervous they'll be cut next.

Pros

Free books. Every 3rd Thursday free beer + pizza. Author M&G events. Most co-workers are pleasant to work with, no drama. Good work/life balance depending on your supervisor. Overall, a good environment, you are respected, especially compared to other large publishers. You get almost all of the last 2 weeks of December off. HR does a great job of pushing diversity initiatives.

Cons

Upper management in my group doesn't care about their employees. My co-workers are great people but supervisors very openly and obviously do not care about getting to know their workers. I can see that morale declines every month I'm here. There were a bunch of layoffs and it was done hastily and in a tacky fashion. And after that, we were never told what the company would be doing with the money saved from these layoffs. The layoffs made more work for everybody else and no raises or help with the transition were made. Raises are rare. Bonuses are only half of your paycheck once a year and they come in late (a long time after the holidays). Upper management is stuck in an antiquated baby boomer way of thinking. There is no room for growth. And no incentives to stay anyways.

Pros

The people you work with are really great and it's awesome to work on something you really love!

Cons

Sometimes upper management doesn't explain their decisions which is hard when it can have a negative impact on your job. Some managers seem to micro-manage more than others. Also the 401k match is nice but the fact that it takes 5 years for it to be fully vested is frustrating since it's well known in the industry the best way to be promoted is to go to a different company.
