Could have been great

Pros

Back in the day, pros included the fun, start-up-like environment, cool co-workers and pride of being involved with a great product.

Cons

HowStuffWorks was a cool, well-respected website before its vision was clouded by the two companies that acquired it - first Convex Group and then Discovery Communications. Environment steadily became more and more corporate, less and less about the talented people and core brand that were so inspiring to begin with. Mission kept shifting so that goals set previously became irrelevant -- "we're not doing that anymore" became a commonly heard phrase.

Pros

Never a boring day; you learn something new every day. Flexible schedule, telecommuting offered, pay has improved. It used to be terrible. Stress level is manageable.

Cons

Direction is uncertain. Been sold 3 times in 3 years. Now, the podcast business has been spun off. Senior management not sure what to do with the website.
