Left Dublin Software Team After 2 Months in Q2 2022

Pros

I worked with decent people

Cons

Unfortunately I feel an obligation to industry colleagues to share my experience. I have worked for 20 years in the Software Industry and never left a permanent position before a tenure of 2 years. I decided to leave Grid Beyond after 2 months due to the number of red flags I noted were not going to change. Feel free to contact me on LinkedIn for more info but unfortunately I would consider the senior mgmt. in Grid Beyond very immature and inexperienced in proper software delivery.

Not a good place to work long term

Pros

Benefits have increased over time. The people working there are great and very friendly and helpful.

Cons

There is little to no structure. The company has not adapted to the level of growth experienced and as a result many people, especially in support services are extremely overwhelmed and under pressure. Grievances aren’t taken seriously and addressed as senior management is consumed with growth strategy. The environment at times has become very toxic and resulted in longer serving employees leaving. There is too much overlap in some departments that should be split out and clearly defined. There is no clear career progression for many roles as seniority is not split throughout a department. Managers do not always understand the tasks that their employees are doing and fail to recognise the time taken or complexities of it, yet do not engage in learning these processes. There is an increasing amount of distrust in managers for some people as they are more focused on protecting themselves then leading their teams.

Pros

The only redeeming aspect of Gridbeyond is that CEO Michael Phelan aggressively pursues government and client expenses, which seems to be the main driver behind the company's operations. Unfortunately, this focus on profits appears to come at the expense of any genuine commitment to green energy or sustainability. Their claims about green energy are misleading and often outright lies, designed more to impress than to make a real difference.

Cons

Management is completely disconnected, with a lack of understanding of day-to-day tasks and poor communication across departments. The US market is poorly managed, with inconsistent hiring and firing practices that seem arbitrary and unfair. There is no clear career progression—employees are left in the dark about future opportunities. Excessive unpaid overtime is expected to meet unrealistic deadlines, creating a stressful environment. Processes are unstructured, leading to chaos and inefficiency. The company’s focus on bonuses for management has diverted attention from genuine growth and improvement. Overall, the company’s ethics and honesty are questionable, with many employees feeling deceived about the true nature of their work.
