They start to delay payments and not respond to queries about it.

I honestly feel like it just isn't worth the time. Producing academic papers for less than $00.1 a word is just incredible exploitation. Also as the nature of writing is academic and requires research, it can result in upwards of eight hours of work for $10-$15 of pay. The fining system is a bit adhoc. 1. kind of long that they fine you but 2, this can be after a client has revised an order and the fines aren't consistent - sometimes $10 sometimes $20. It does not give you the chance to build a portfolio of freelance writing as you are helping people achieve their university degrees.
