Pros
Good people, I will miss some of my dockworkers. I have a great deal of respect for people who actually care about their jobs. Higher than average pay in the industry aka golden handcuffs. Learn everything about what not to do in a professional workplace. If you hit goals, upper management will leave you alone. Work 48 hours and receive no phone calls during your 3 day weekends. Gain a thick skin dealing with hostile workers and environment.
Cons
Very low morale, entire workforce hates each other or the company. Bitter and sour old union workforce and managers. 80% of the union workforce are unmotivated and overpaid. Extremely high turnover in management (one year we went through 10 supervisors and managers). This place will eat your soul and happiness. Old school management style resistant to positive change or progress. Bully style management concerning scheduling. Intimidation and favoritism among the "good ol boys". Older supervisors avoid discipline from upper management. Don't even think about getting sick, you will be treated like worthless scum. You will be called vulgar words when you try to take a sick day. Very unprofessional. Out of touch corporate engineers/managers. Outdated computer system, programs, and production grading system. Union contract very protective/near impossible to issue discipline. Dirty work environment; dust, rats, birds, feces, spit, snow, slush and mud on the dock.
